Crime Classics came to CBS September 30, 1953 and was a neat little series of "true crime stories". The show introduced itself succinctly: "Crime Classics, a series of true crime stories from the records and newspapers of every land, from every time. Your host each week, Mr. Thomas Hyland -- connoisseur of crime, student of violence, and teller of murders." Thomas Hyland was played by Lou Merrill, although you'd never know it was an "actor" doing the part. The great Elliott Lewis, actor, producer and director of Suspense, Broadway is My Beat, and On Stage is in charge of this very intelligent and enjoyable show. Bernard Herrmann composed the music that duplicated authentic music of the era being dramatized. Morton Fine and David Friedkin wrote the scripts. Lewis and his writers collected and developed true crime stories expressly for Crime Classics.

Thomas Hyland's delivery is measured and mild-mannered, as if giving a college lecture. Would that all professors were this interesting! The actors in the stories themselves are uniformly sensitive. Orchestral scores by the great Bernard Hermann, who did Orson Welles' Mercury Theater radio show and then Alfred Hitchcock's films, give the stories sophistication and mood. So do the tasteful sound effects. There is a wry, cool-blooded tone to the proceedings.

Cases profiled on the series ranged from seventeenth-century murder to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Each and every story, however bizarre, is actually based on fact. For example, the show about the Younger Brothers of the American West has some very interesting background details concerning Quantrell's Raiders and the Kansas Jayhawks. In the story of "John Hayes, his Head, and How They Were Parted," we hear the tale of a glassblower who blows glass perfectly and completely surrounding the severed head of a unknown dead man and placed in glass. Then it is placed in a museum where it remained pending identification. Thus his killers were found out by the dead man, using his head.

Seeing Ear Theater

Seeing_Ear_Theater.jpg?profile=RESIZE_400x

Between 1997 and 2001, at the height of the dot-com bubble, the Sci-Fi channel decided to invest some money into producing a number of original audio stories under the banner of Seeing Ear Theater, essentially a “next generation” of radio plays for a modern audience. A talented team of script-writers, excellent actors and sound effects people crafted a series of remarkable episodes, breathing life into the stories of both classic writers, like Harlan Ellison and Frederic Brown, and modern writers, like Neil Gaiman and J. Michael Straczynski.

With the help of their staff, more than 14,000 listeners, and a panel of renowned American musicians, National Public Radio showcased the “100 most important American musical works of the 20th century.” These engaging pieces aired throughout the year 2000 on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Weekend Edition Saturday, Weekend Edition Sunday and Weekend All Things Considered. A dream course in contemporary music appreciation, this ambitious series consisting of 1900 features told the story behind each musical work under consideration. Through music and interviews, the series producer Elizabeth Blair and the executive producers Murray Horwitz and Andy Trudeau led a multitude of producers, editors, reporters, commentators and hosts connecting listeners to the creative process, examining the cultural contexts in which the works were created and revealing how musicians developed their music and transformed it into art the endures. Never formulaic, these segments treated listeners to a variety of genres including musical scores, rap tunes, blues, rock, country & western and much more. The diversity of multicultural musical choices was thought provoking and robustly representative of America’s varied strains. For giving listeners a comprehensive, insightful review of music that became the national sound track of the Twentieth Century, a Peabody goes to The NPR 100.

Legends of Radio - Famous Finales

31128416862?profile=RESIZE_584x

"Not with a bang, but a whimper." The finales here aren't particularly famous, but the vintage radio shows they end are--"The Jack Benny Show," "Gunsmoke," "Dragnet," "The Lone Ranger," and more. Old-time American radio programs didn't end their runs as today's TV shows do--with special episodes heralded with hoop-la. Therefore, this reviewer finds the binding concept of this anthology bizarre, not to mention sad. Nonetheless, the listening is wonderful. How nicely these cop shows and comedies stand up over time! How seductive they are still! The volume's editors have chosen mostly the cream of the eclectic old-time radio crop. Sound quality varies widely, but the content is first-rate.

Ace in the Hole (1951 film)

500px-Ace_in_the_Hole_%281951_film_poster%29.jpg?profile=RESIZE_400x

Ace in the Hole, also known as The Big Carnival, is a 1951 American satirical drama film directed, produced, and co-written by Billy Wilder. The film stars Kirk Douglas as a cynical, disgraced reporter who creates a media circus surrounding a man trapped in a cave in rural New Mexico to try to regain a job on a major newspaper. The film co-stars Jan Sterling and features Robert Arthur and Porter Hall.

The film marked a series of firsts for Wilder: it was the first time he was involved in a project as a writer, producer, and director; his first film after parting ways with his long-time writing partner Charles Brackett; and his first film to be a critical and commercial failure, though it has since been reappraised as one of his major works.

Without consulting Wilder, Paramount Pictures executive Y. Frank Freeman changed the title to The Big Carnival just prior to its release. Early television broadcasts retained that title, but when aired by Turner Classic Movies – and when released on DVD by The Criterion Collection in July 2007 – it reverted to Ace in the Hole.

In 2017, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

🖥️ Windows PC (Best Method)

Use Windows + K for the best wireless display experience:

Press Win + K on your keyboard
Select your TV from the list of wireless displays
Choose "Duplicate" or "Second screen only"
Play the video in fullscreen for best quality

💡 This uses Miracast/Wi-Fi Direct for smoother playback than Chrome tab casting.

📱 iPhone / iPad (AirPlay)

Tap the AirPlay button in the player (or use Control Center)
Select your Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV
Video will play directly on your TV

✅ AirPlay sends the stream directly to your TV for smooth playback.

🤖 Android

Option 1: Tap the Cast button (works with Chromecast devices)

Option 2 (Recommended): Use Screen Mirroring:

Swipe down for Quick Settings on your phone
Tap "Smart View" / "Screen Cast" / "Wireless Display"
Select your TV from the list

💡 Screen mirroring works with all TVs and all stream types.

⚠️ LG / Samsung Smart TVs - IMPORTANT

These TVs do NOT have native Chromecast support!

The cast button will connect but video won't play. You must use screen mirroring instead:

Best: Press Win + K (Windows wireless display)
Chrome: Menu (⋮) → Cast → Sources → Cast tab
Android: Quick Settings → Smart View / Screen Cast

💡 For smooth native casting, consider buying a Chromecast device (~$30). It plugs into your TV's HDMI port and enables true Chromecast support.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Make sure your TV and device are on the same WiFi network
Try restarting your TV or Chromecast
For laggy playback, try lowering the video quality
Right-click casting is always laggy - use the cast button instead

Black Museum: Orson Welles (High Quality)

31105660688?profile=RESIZE_400x

The Black Museum is a radio crime-drama program produced by Harry Alan Towers, which was broadcast in the USA on the Mutual network in 1952. It was then broadcast in Europe in 1953 on Radio Luxembourg, a commercial radio station, and was not broadcast by the BBC until 1991.

Towers was based in London, but this series was recorded in Sydney, Australia. In 1946 Towers and his mother, Margaret Miller Towers, started a company called Towers of London that sold various syndicated radio shows around the world, including The Lives of Harry Lime with Orson Welles, The Secrets of Scotland Yard with Clive Brook, Horatio Hornblower with Michael Redgrave, and a series of Sherlock Holmes stories featuring John Gielgud as Holmes, Ralph Richardson as Watson and Welles as Moriarty.

Towers visited Australia in the late 1940s and set up production facilities in Sydney. The Black Museum was produced in Sydney by Creswick Jenkinson on behalf of Towers of London. It had a top-line Australian cast including Joe McCormick, plus American actor Harp McGuire. Orson Welles's introductions were recorded on tape in London, then flown to Australia to be added to the locally recorded performances. This was the first series to be produced in Australia in this way.

31105663677?profile=RESIZE_400x

The Black Museum was based on real-life cases from the files of Scotland Yard's Black Museum. The programme was transcribed in 1951 and was broadcast in the United States in 1952 on Mutual.  More than 500 of the network's stations carried it. Ira Marion was the scriptwriter and music for the series was composed and conducted by Sidney Torch. This same music was used for the opening credits of, and incidental music in, the 1955 film They Can't Hang Me, starring Terence Morgan.

Orson Welles was both host and narrator of stories of horror and mystery, based on Scotland Yard's collection of murder weapons and various ordinary objects once associated with historical true crime cases.

The show's opening began:

"This is Orson Welles, speaking from London. (Sound of Big Ben chimes) The Black Museum ... a repository of death. Here in the grim stone structure on the Thames which houses Scotland Yard is a warehouse of homicide, where everyday objects ... a woman’s shoe, a tiny white box, a quilted robe ... all are touched by murder." Robert Rietti played the lead roles and Keith Pyott was often in the cast.

In 2002, Towers produced The Black Museum for television and hired director Gregory Mackenzie to be the showrunner and director for the anthology series using the original narration by Welles. The adaptation was shot on location in London in a film noir style and the pilot starred Michael York as Scotland Yard Inspector Russell.

The Big Lie: A Jack Bergin Mystery

51a3JwCcwQL._SL500_.jpg?profile=RESIZE_400x

Jon Hamm leads an all-star cast that includes Kate Mara, Ana de la Reguera, John Slattery, and Bradley Whitford in the riveting true story behind the making of the one American movie the FBI never wanted you to see. All seven episodes will be available on June 16.

The Big Lie follows FBI special agent Jack Bergin (Jon Hamm), who is sent to investigate three blacklisted filmmakers—Academy Award-winning writer Michael Wilson, Academy Award-nominated producer Paul Jarrico, and director Herbert J. Biberman—who were inspired by a New Mexico labor strike to make a movie that dramatized their pro-labor, pro-feminist beliefs. Convinced the film is a recruitment tool for the Communist Party, Jack will do whatever is necessary to shut the production down.

Featuring a star-studded cast that also includes Giancarlo Esposito, David Strathairn, Lisa Edelstein, Raymond Cruz, Troy Evans, Kirk Baltz, John Getz, and Lela Loren, The Big Lie is an explosive story of conspiracy, betrayal, and temptation that resonates with today’s divided America and reminds us all that fear spreads faster than the truth.

Created by John Mankiewicz, based on a story from Paul Jarrico.

Follow Chick Bowdrie's adventure in these classic westerns by America's favorite storyteller, Louis L'Amour.

Chick Bowdrie could have been an outlaw, but he rode a different trail. The Texas Rangers recruited Bowdrie to help pursue the most wanted men in the Southwest. And Bowdrie knew the terrain all too well: the dusty trails, bitter cattle feuds, the desperate killers, and the weather-beaten towns that could explode into chaos at the wrong word. The Rangers were called in to handle the tough cases, and Bowdrie was the toughest and smartest. He had vowed to seek out justice, but there were times when justice required fists and guns...

North and South (miniseries)

North%2BSouth-Complete1-3.jpg

North and South is a trilogy of American television miniseries broadcast on the American Broadcasting Company network in 1985, 1986, and 1994. Set before, during, and immediately after the American Civil War, they are based on the 1980s trilogy of novels North and South by John Jakes. The 1985 first installment, North and South, remains the seventh-highest rated miniseries in TV history.North and South: Book II (1986) was met with similar success, while 1994's Heaven and Hell: North and South Book III was poorly received by both critics and audiences.

The saga tells the story of the enduring friendship between Orry Main of South Carolina (Patrick Swayze) and George Hazard of Pennsylvania (James Read), who become best friends while attending the United States Military Academy at West Point but later find themselves and their families on opposite sides of the war. The slave-owning Mains are rural planters from outside Charleston, South Carolina, while the Hazards, who reside in a small Pennsylvania mill town, profit from ownership of iron manufacturing and industry capital, their differences reflecting the divisions between North and South that eventually led to the Civil War.

The History of Radio

family-radio-console.jpg?w=300&profile=RESIZE_400x

The history of radio is a century-spanning evolution from 19th-century scientific curiosity to the first global mass communication medium. It began with the theoretical discovery of electromagnetic waves and transitioned into a practical tool for maritime safety before exploding into a household staple for news and entertainment.

To some it was a miracle. Others call it the triumph of illiteracy. Somewhere between adoration and scorn. Somewhere between the carrier pigeon and television. There was and is radio. We take radio for granted. Perhaps think of it as a second rate medium. A poor relation to our pride and joy, television. But fewer than a hundred years ago, the discovery that people could communicate over great distances without wires, galvanized the world to a degree that has been equalled.

The Colonel Sanders Movie

Colonel Harland David Sanders (1890–1980) was the American entrepreneur who founded the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant chain. While he is now a global corporate icon, his success came late in life after decades of failure in various professions, including railroad work, insurance sales, and law.

This is a very entertaining and interesting bio movie.

Peter Lorre (born June 26, 1904, Rózsahegy, Hung.—died March 23, 1964, Hollywood, Calif., U.S.) was a Hungarian-born American actor who projected a sinister image as a lisping, round-faced, soft-voiced villain in thrillers.

Peter Lorre’s 1940s radio performances are widely considered masterpieces of suspense, leveraging his uniquely sinister voice to dominate anthology series like Suspense and Mystery in the Air. Known for bringing intense, often unhinged energy to his roles.
