  • Sexton Blake, "the poor man's Sherlock Holmes," appeared in British comic strips, boys' adventure magazines, and on film. These books shown were collections of stories which were called "annuals" because they usually appeared at Christmas time. Note the number "4" in the circle by the photo of the woman Justice figure bandishing a sword. This was the price, 4 shillings, which at the time (1938-41) was about $1.
