Springbok Radio

zs5hwqka6228.jpg?profile=RESIZE_710xSpringbok Radio was the first commercial radio station of South Africa. It closed down in 1985, but not before broadcasting memorable content that stays until today with several generations of South Africans.

From The Adventure of Jet Jungle, a programme for children, to the police drama Squad Cars and many other dramas, soap operas, game shows, documentaries and comedy shows, brought to the public through the voices of legendary radio personalities and presenters, this radio station's programming is part of South African history.

In 2008, Springbok Radio Preservation Society Archive together with SABC Radio Archives started working together to keep this legacy alive by restoring and preserving these old broadcasts. The result was the launch of Springbook Radio Revisited in that same year, an online radio station where the restored programmes are streamed.

The Investigator - CBC (30-May-1954)

mccarthy.jpgThe Investigator (1954) was a radio play written by Reuben Ship and first broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on May 30 of that year. The play lampooned the actions of the U.S. House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) and United States Senator Joseph McCarthy.

The play is memorable not only for its biting satiric tone, but also for its brilliant acting and production. The radio actor John Drainie provided an uncannily accurate imitation of Joe McCarthy. On more than one occasion, Drainie drove from his home in Toronto across the border to Buffalo to watch the hearings on television; he based his character on seeing the senator in action.

The play was denounced as communist propaganda by none other than Ed Sullivan, and the recording gained a certain status as an underground classic during one of the high points of the Great Red Scare of the McCarthy Era. .

The Investigator is top–notch drama from the golden age of radio and sounds as brilliant now as when it first aired.

The Byrds

tambourine_medium.jpg?profile=RESIZE_710xTwo one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, the continuously groundbreaking band who bridged the gaps between The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, the Beach Boys, the Los Angeles psychedelic underground and classic country. Their memorable music set the stage for everyone from the Eagles to Tom Petty to R.E.M.

THERE IS A SEASON covers 1964-1967, the all-too-brief hitmaking years of the Byrds' original five members - Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke. They were an electrified folk band who topped the charts with some of the decades' most innovative singles and albums. By 1967, their musical harmony was engulfed by the off-stage disharmony that pushed them to reach those heights. Instead of being directed by the singular vision of one leader, The Byrds were consistently led by everybody's contributions - from their original five members to the musicians involved with their later years.

Despite the inner turmoil that resulted in a revolving cast of characters, the Byrds always used those changes as opportunities to further their musical evolution. "They all brought something new and something defining," says journalist David Fricke, "and it all became part of the Byrds sound. They didn't change the Byrds to the degree that it changed the sound. What they did became the Byrds."

Both segments feature the wide range of music that made The Byrds of the 60s most influential bands, along with comments by its two longest-lasting members: Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman. Writers David Fricke, Anthony DeCurtis, Lenny Kaye and Byrds historian Sid Griffin are also interviewed.

Series synopsis:

Murder at Midnight was an old-time radio show featuring macabre tales of suspense, often with a supernatural twist. It was produced in New York and was first heard in syndication between September 16, 1946 and September 8, 1947 on WJZ (now WABC). The show's writers included Robert Newman, Joseph Ruscoll, Max Erlich and William Norwood, and it was directed by Anton M. Leder. The host was Raymond Morgan, who delivered the memorable lines of introduction over Charles Paul's effective organ theme: "Midnight, the witching hour when the night is darkest, our fears the strongest, and our strength at its lowest ebb. Midnight, when the graves gape open and death strikes."

A total of 51 episodes were produced, though the last two were never aired. Ten shows were syndicated and rerun on Mutual in 1950. Though very entertaining at its best, the series' failure can perhaps be attributed to some wildly implausible stories.

THE BEATLES: The Days In Their Life

303516315966.jpg?profile=RESIZE_710x

THE BEATLES: The Days In Their Life

A thirty-hour chronology tracing the life of four musicians who had a dramatic effect on directions taken by others. The group that inspired and redefined the boundaries of contemporary music.

Below is the press release accompanying the set from TM Productions at the time of release in 1981:

"The Beatles: The Days In Their Life" is a 30-hour chronological study of the band that did more to change the scope of popular music than any other force of the 1960's.
During the first 24 hours of the special, every song ever recorded by The Beatles is played, including several numbers never released. Because the producers have gained access to the original EMI masters, some songs previously heard only in mono are now in stereo.

The final 6 hours of the show trace the direction each of The Beatles took after the band dis-banded in December 1970. All information is completely up-to-date as of the date of release in 1981.

"The Beatles: The Days In Their Life" includes hundreds of interviews with The Beatles themselves and their associates, many of which have never been heard.
While "The Beatles: The Days In Their Life" is 30 hours long and is designed to run as a blockbuster, the show may also be stripped into one-hour segments if so desired.
This twenty-one volume set contains the entire Days In Their Life program as it was originally broadcast in the early Eighties. The Days In Their Life was originally pressed onto thirty vinyl LP records. It was these vinyl LPs that radio stations used as a source for their broadcasts. The collection presented here is sourced from one of these original broadcast vinyl LP sets.

New entry in blog....finally! :P

Wow!...I forgot this was ever here...

I don't know how often people read or post on each other's blog.  In my case, I forgot I even had on (lol!  )In case anyone does read this I just wanted to alert you to the fact that I attempted to purchase a subscription to the subscription service called uploaded.net and my personal bank alerted me to the fact that there has been numerous scam reports  and complaints filed against this site.  I don't know if it is the site or somehow someone unrelated to the site is perpetrating fraud and criminal activities against people that attempt to signup.  Luckily, when the charge on my bank card came through to authorize the transaction my bank alerted me to ensure that the charge was legitimate.  That is when they informed me of the problems.  I decided not to allow the charge to be made.  It could have gone through with no issues but I decided to play it safe and avoid problems.  I did notice that the company behind the site was in Holland but the money went to the UK.  (once again...probably legit but who knows?)  Even if not legit, I only fund this account when I am going to make a purchase and only for the total amount of the purchase.  Cheers!
