  • If "True Grit" gives you a taste of Portis' style,
try "Dog of the South." A husband tracks his runaway wife and her lover through Mexico via credit card receipts. Doesn't want revenge, mostly wants his car back.

I never have seen the film "Norwood," starring Glenn Campbell. There's a scene in the book toward the beginning when Norwood gets home after a hitch in the Marines.
Portis lists in detail the repairs and modifications Norwood does, ending with gathering rocks, rolling and painting them into the anchor and chain logo of the USMC. Portis gets more done in a paragraph than I do in a year.
Once completely tuned to Portis's wavelength, adepts are ready to attempt "Masters of Atlantis."
