The television series "The Restless Gun" evolved directly from the radio classic "The Six Shooter." The Six Shooter starred James Stewart as Britt Ponset, a solitary wanderer and gunfighter in the American West, and ran on NBC radio from 1953 to 1954. When adapted for television in 1957, the pilot episode featured John Payne as Britt Ponset, maintaining the same character and premise.
The pilot for "The Restless Gun" aired in March 1957 as an episode of "Schlitz Playhouse of Stars," with Payne in Stewart’s radio role, Britt Ponset.Though the early TV scripts were directly adapted from "The Six Shooter" radio episodes, by the time the series began airing as "The Restless Gun," Payne's character was renamed Vint Bonner. The name "Six Shooter" continued to appear in some initial episodes, acknowledging its radio heritage.
The series ran for 78 episodes on NBC from 1957-1959, featuring Bonner as a wandering cowboy who often chose peaceful solutions over violence.
