Death Valley Days was an American radio and television anthology series featuring true stories of the old American West, particularly the Death Valley area. Created in 1930 by Ruth Woodman, the program was broadcast on radio until 1945. It continued from 1952 to 1975 as a syndicated television series. Stories of the Century

matt+clark.jpg
Stories of the Century is a Western television series that ran in syndication through Republic Pictures between January 23, 1954, and March 11, 1955.

Jim Davis (who later played "Jock Ewing" on the television series Dallas) portrayed the role of fictitious Southwestern Railroad detective Matt Clark. Davis also did narration for each episode. Mary Castle co-starred in twenty-six episodes as Clark’s attractive assistant, Frankie Adams. Castle left the program and was replaced by Kristine Miller who appeared in fourteen episodes as Margaret Jones, or "Jonesy".

In 1955, Stories of the Century became the first western to win an Emmy Award in the then category of "Western or Adventure Series".

9781400068661_custom.jpg?t=1340030982&s=15Eighty years ago, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created the iconic comic book character Superman, but it took several years of rejections before they finally sold him to Detective Comics Inc. in 1938. The distinctive superhero made his first appearance in the comics in June 1938 — and since then has appeared in radio dramas, TV shows, video games, newspaper comics and countless films.

How has the Man of Steel evolved over the past eight decades — and what has made him so popular? Those were the questions that intrigued biographer Larry Tye, whose book Superman tells the story of the red-and-blue-clad icon who Tye calls "the longest-lived American hero of the last century."

The Man of Steel has endured in books, movies, radio serials, comic books and cartoons. "Americans embrace Superman partly because he captured so many things that are part of our psyche and part of our sense of ourselves," says biographer Larry Tye. (NPR June 18, 2012)  Read More

The shows feature old time music and history of the music, instruments, and styles of a time past. There is four episodes that will give you a history lesson about the Appalachian music. You do not want to miss these four shows.

Show #9 - October 27, 2005 -- Jack describes the history of old time mountain music and plays songs that correspond to this history. Main emphasis is on the work of Wayne Erbsen and his selected songs. Original songs by Ernest V. Stoneman and The Carter Family are included.  Download now (9.1 Mb - 51.4 minutes).

Show #14 - May 13, 2006 -- Jack gives a second installment of the history of old-time and bluegrass music. (Listen to Show #9 for the first installment.) The Carter Family made a major contribution to old-time, bluegrass and country music from 1927 to 1943. They recorded over 300 songs, many of which became big hits and were played by many later bands including those that play today. Maybelle Carter forever changed the way the guitar is played and everyone who plays the guitar now uses her style of picking. You won't want to miss this show and be sure to view the accompanying websites listed in Jack's blog..................  Download now (9.8 Mb - 56 minutes).

Show #16 - June 10, 2006 -- Jack gives a third installment of the history of old-time and bluegrass music. (Listen to Episodes 9 and 14 for the first and second installments.) Naxos Audiobooks: 2 FREE Horror tales, The Damned Thing by Ambrose Bierce and The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde:
SFFaudio Online Audio

Naxos AudiobooksNaxos Audiobooks, is offering a couple of free audiobook downloads this month!

Here’s part of the description of the first one:
Bierce’s ghost stories are not among the best-written but they are unusual and distinctly ‘modern’ in their definition of what constitutes a ‘ghost’. They enjoy a popularity today that eluded them during Bierce’s lifetime, perhaps because the late twentieth century reader is more prepared to accept his psychological approach to the genre. The stories resist neat classification, no conclusions are offered. Whatever the true nature of the entity in The Damned Thing, Bierce offers no tidy answer. One of the protagonists offers his theory but it is no more than that and you are left with the feeling that perhaps the entity wanders the earth to this day and that Bierce merely recorded one episode of its existence.

“A terrifying ghost is haunting the ancient mansion of Canterville Chase, complete with creaking floorboards, clanking chains and gruesome disguises – but the new occupants seem strangely undisturbed by his presence. Deftly contrasting the conventional gothic ghost story with the pragmatism of the modern world, Wilde creates a gently comic fable of the conflict between old and new. Rupert Degas’s hilarious reading brings the absurdity and theatricality of the story to life.”

The Canterville Ghost has been adapted to film more than a dozen times! Here’s the trailer for the first such, from 1944:

"A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty hi-yo silver! The Lone Ranger! With his faithful Indian companion Tonto, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear! From out of the past come the thundering Hoofbeats of the great horse Silver...the Lone Ranger rides again!"

Few things are more iconic in American popular culture than announcer Fred Foy reciting those lines against the opening strains of the William Tell Overture. The Lone Ranger was a western adventure show that premiered in January of 1933 on radio station WXYZ in Detroit. The show, which was aimed primarily at children, had a strong adult following as well and continued for 2,956 episodes on WXYZ, the Mutual Network and the NBC Blue/ABC networks until September 3, 1954. Repeat broadcasts continued until May 25, 1956.

The show had been created by WXYZ owner George W. Trendle and writer Fran Striker, though who contributed what to the concept is up for debate. The character of the Lone Ranger was believed to have been inspired by Texas Ranger Captain John R. Hughes, to
whom Zane Grey had dedicated a novel in 1915. The show was a major hit, and inspired numerous books, comic books, movie serials, and eventually a truly memorable television series starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels in 1949, lasting until 1957.

The basic story of the Lone Ranger is ingrained in American culture. The unnamed hero was the only survivor of a group of six Texas Rangers who were ambushed by Butch Cavendish and his gang in a canyon named Bryant's Gap. An Indian named Tonto later came upon the massacre, finding one ranger still alive. Tonto nurses the ranger back to health, who then swears to bring Cavendish to justice. To keep Cavendish off his guard, the ranger and Tonto make six graves in Bryant's Gap, and the ranger fashions a black domino mask from a ranger's vest to conceal his identity. He tamed the wild horse Silver for his mount, and after making sure Cavendish paid for his crimes, the Lone Ranger continued to fight for justice in the Old West. He was later joined by his young nephew Dan Reid.

On the original radio series, the Lone Ranger was portrayed by George Seaton, followed by Earle Graser. After Graser's untimely death in 1941, Brace Beemer, the show's former announcer, took over the role. Director James Jewell and announcer Fred Foy also played the lead role for one broadcast each, as did an unknown actor using the name "Jack Deeds." Tonto was played by John Todd throughout the series, being replaced on isolated broadcasts by Roland Parker (who was best known as Kato on The Green Hornet). Other supporting players were primarily regional actors from Detroit and WXYZ staff. Jay Michael (who also starred in Sgt. Preston of the Yukon), Bill Saunders (noted for voicing Butch Cavendish), Paul Hughes, Jane Fae, Rube and Liz Weiss, and future movie star John Hodiak. The part of Dan Reid was played by child actors Bob Martin, James Lipton, and Dick Beals.

Folk America - BBC Documentary Series

boggs_512.jpg

Folk America - Part 1 : Birth Of A Nation

Part one of a three-part documentary series on American folk music, tracing its history from the recording boom of the 1920s to the folk revival of the 1960s. The opening part looks at how, in the 1920s, record companies scoured the American south for talent to sell. This was a golden age of American music, as the likes of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charlie Poole, Dock Boggs and Mississippi John Hurt burst onto record, eager to have a share in the new industry and the money it made, only to lapse into obscurity when the depression hit at the start of the 30s. Contributors include Judy Collins, Steve Earle, Tom Paxton and Pete Seeger, surviving relations of 1920s greats such as Mississippi John Hurt, the Carter Family and Uncle Dave Macon, plus three actual survivors of the era - guitarist Slim Bryant, banjoist Wade Mainer and Delta bluesman 'Honeyboy' Edwards.

Folk America - Part 2 : This Land Is Your Land

Part two of a three-part documentary series on American folk music, tracing its history from the recording boom of the 1920s to the folk revival of the 1960s. In the depression of the 1930s, John Lomax found convicted murderer Leadbelly in a southern jail. Leadbelly's music was never quite as pure and untouched by pop as Lomax believed, but it set a new agenda for folk music, redefining it as the voice of protest, the voice of the outsider and the oppressed. Dustbowl drifter Woody Guthrie fitted the mould perfectly and the two of them teamed up with Lomax's son Alan, Pete Seeger and Josh White - a group of friends who believed 'they could make a better world if they all got together and just sang about it'. Their songs and their radical politics took them to high places of influence, but brought about their downfall in the blacklisting 1950s. Contributors include Pete Seeger, Rambling Jack Elliot, Anna Lomax, Tom Paxton, Roger McGuinn, Woody Guthrie's sister and daughter and Josh White's son.

Folk America - Part 3 : Blowin' In The Wind

Part three of a three-part documentary series on American folk music, tracing its history from the recording boom of the 1920s to the folk revival of the 1960s. In the 1960s a new generation, spearheaded by Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, took folk to the top of the charts and made it the voice of youthful protest. Whilst the northern folk revivalists helped bring civil rights to the south, the Newport Folk Festival brought the old music of the south to the college kids in the north. However, when Dylan turned up at Newport in 1965 with an electric guitar things would never be the same again. With Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Robbie Robertson, Stephen Stills, Country Joe McDonald, Roger McGuinn, Odetta and Tom Paxton.
