Just returned from seeing a little theater group called the "Bread and Circus Theater Company". They performed  "It's A Wonderful Life." as a live radio play. The year was 1946. The cast was all dressed in vintage clothing. They performed to microphones. Read from scripts. The actors performed multiple roles. Sound effects performed live on stage. A couple of adds from sponsers, hair cream and soap. Even had "On Air" and "Applause" signs for the audience. All and all a nice trip into the past to get the feel of what it must have been like to see a radio drama performed. If anyone gets the opportunity to see a performance from a theater group; By all means, make haste.

New documentary from R.H. Greene, "War of the Welles," telling the back-story of the production of "War of the Worlds", correcting many myths, and explaining why it works as a radio broadcast. The show is introduced by sci-fi icon George Takei, star of the "Star Trek" tv and film series.

Pink Martini releases Diller recording of 'Smile'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Music collective Pink Martini has released the last song Phyllis Diller recorded, Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," as a fitting tribute to her memory.

The voice of the late comedian is immediately recognizable on the recording, perhaps a little more wizened, but still strong and full of emotion.

Diller died Monday in Los Angeles at age 95. The song was recorded last February by Pink Martini bandleader Thomas Lauderdale for the Portland, Ore., collective's next album.

Lauderdale says he may add strings and a clarinet to the simple piano-and-voice recording before the album, "Get Happy," comes out next spring. More

Series summary:

The Great Gildersleeve is a radio situation comedy broadcast from August 31, 1941, to March 21, 1957. Initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson,[3] it was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. The series was built around the character Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a regular element of the radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly. The character was introduced in the October 3, 1939 episode (number 216) of that series. The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest popularity in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spinoff and later in four feature films released at the height of the show's popularity.

In Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve had been a pompous windbag and nemesis of Fibber McGee. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became a Gildersleeve catchphrase. The character went by several aliases on Fibber McGee and Molly; his middle name was revealed to be "Philharmonic" in "Gildersleeve's Diary" episode on October 22, 1940.

"Gildy" grew so popular that Kraft Foods—promoting its Parkay margarine—sponsored a new series featuring Peary's somewhat mellowed and always befuddled Gildersleeve as the head of his own family.

Just for Laughs: Gags (JFL Gags) is a Canadian silent comedy/hidden camera reality television show that is under the Just for Laughs brand. On December 26, 2002, JFL Gags began airing on CBC and The Comedy Network in Canada. Just for Laughs: Gags currently airs Weekdays at 6 pm, Just for Laughs: Gags does not air on CBC anymore. The show also airs on Telemundo in the United States, Multishow Channel in Brazil and occupies a Summer prime time slot on SIC in Portugal.

This series' format is the typical hidden camera comedy show, playing silly pranks on unsuspecting subjects while hidden cameras capture the people's response (similar to UK hidden camera comedy shows). This show plays music in the background, but does not contain any sound and dialogue (except for brief sound effects and laughter) but you can occasionally hear the actors and victims talking. It is filmed in Downtown Montreal and rural Quebec although some segments are filmed in the UK or Mexico. Sound effects, music and a laugh track are added in post-production.

About the Author L.M. Montgomery
 
Lucy Maud Montgomery and publicly known as L.M. Montgomery, (30 November 1874–24 April 1942) was a Canadian author, best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. Once published, Anne of Green Gables was an immediate success. The central character, Anne, an orphaned girl, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character.

The novels became the basis for the highly acclaimed 1985 CBC television miniseries, Anne of Green Gables and several other television movies and programs, including Road to Avonlea, which ran in Canada and the U.S. from 1990-1996.

L.M. Montgomery worked as a teacher in various island schools. As well, beginning in 1897, she began to have her short stories published in various magazines and newspapers. A prolific talent, Montgomery had over 100 stories published from 1897 to 1907 inclusive.

In 1898 Montgomery moved back to Cavendish to live with her widowed grandmother. For a short time in 1901 and 1902 she worked in Halifax for the newspapers Chronicle and Echo. She returned to live with and care for her grandmother in 1902. Montgomery was inspired to write her first books during this time on Prince Edward Island.

In 1908, Montgomery published her first book, Anne of Green Gables. Three years later, shortly after her grandmother's death, she married Ewan (found in Montgomery's notes and letters as "Ewan") Macdonald (1870 - 1943), a Presbyterian Minister, and moved to Ontario where he had taken the position of minister of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Leaskdale in present-day Uxbridge Township, also affiliated with the congregation in nearby Zephyr.

Leaskdale manse, home of Lucy Maud Montgomery from 1911 to 1926 Montgomery had three sons: Chester Cameron Macdonald (July 7, 1912–1964); Hugh Alexander Macdonald, who was stillborn August 13, 1914 and inspired the death of Anne Shirley's first child, Joyce, in Anne's House of Dreams; and Ewan Stuart Macdonald (October 7, 1915–1982).

Montgomery wrote her next eleven books from the Leaskdale manse. The structure was subsequently sold by the congregation and is now the Lucy Maud Montgomery Leaskdale Manse Museum. In 1926, the family moved in to the Norval Presbyterian Charge, in present-day Halton Hills, Ontario, where today the Lucy Maud Montgomery Memorial Garden can be seen from Highway 7.

Killing the Butterfly by Colin MacDonald was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 2 December 2006.  A romantic thriller set on the sleeper between London Euston and Edinburgh. Two murder witnesses are put under police protection pending the High Court trial. But something goes wrong and they have to flee, never knowing whom it's safe to trust. A librarian and a lawyer's PA are thrust into Edinburgh's dark underbelly after witnessing a gangland execution. Though nervous of the consequences, Barker and Hannah agree to give evidence against the killers and are put under police protection until the case comes to court. But news of their whereabouts reaches the killer's friends and the pair have to run for their lives, never knowing who is friend and who is foe.

The Twilight Zone "Radio Dramas" is a nationally syndicated radio series featuring adaptations of the classic television series The Twilight Zone, launched in October 2002. Many of the stories are based on Rod Serling's scripts from the original Twilight Zone series, and are slightly expanded and updated to reflect contemporary technology and trends (e.g., the mention of "cell phones" and "CD-ROMs" which, of course, were not around when the television show aired in the 1960's). In addition to adapting all of the original episodes aired on the 1959-1964 TV series, the radio series has also adapted some Twilight Zone TV scripts which were never produced, scripts from other Serling TV productions, and new stories written especially for the radio series. Taking Serling's role as narrator is Stacy Keach. A different Hollywood actor, such as Blair Underwood and James Caviezel, takes the lead role in each radio drama. In addition, several stars who appeared on the original TV series, such as H.M. Wynant, Orson Bean and Morgan Brittany, appear, although purposely not in the roles they originated on television. The series features a full cast, music and sound effects and is produced in the flavor of classic radio dramas but using today's technology.

"Of all the major inventions of the twentieth century, few have had a more profound impact on people's lives than radio and television. By 1933, two-thirds of American homes had at least one radio, twice as many as those with telephones. Forty-five years later, 97 percent of all households had at least one television set. But the numbers cannot convey the contradictory roles that broadcasting has played in American society as it has reshaped the country's politics, economy, and culture.".

The Tunnel under the World" is a science fiction short story by Frederik Pohl. It was first published in 1954 in Galaxy magazine. It has often been anthologized, notably appearing in The Golden Age of Science Fiction, edited by Kingsley Amis (1981).

It was dramatized by Mike Walker on BBC Radio 4 - Afternoon Play - 22.12.2000.

Guy and Mary Burckhardt wake up in their house in Tylerton on June 15, having both had terrible nightmares but they can't recall the events of their dreams. Guy dismisses the dream and goes to work as usual, the downtown offices of Contro Chemicals, which operates a highly automated and robot-staffed petrochemicals plant. But something isn't right; he is surrounded everywhere by loud and all-pervasive advertising jingles for everything from cigarettes to freezers.

One of the few remaining episodes of the great BBC series 'Out Of The Unknown'. Directed by Alan Cooke, 'Tunnel Under The World' was adapted by David Campton from a story by Frederik Pohl. It was first transmitted on 1st December 1966 and starred Ronald Hines and Petra Davies. (Season 2, episode 8)

Few things are more iconic in American popular culture than announcer Fred Foy reciting those lines against the opening strains of the William Tell Overture. The Lone Ranger was a western adventure show that premiered in January of 1933 on radio station WXYZ in Detroit. The show, which was aimed primarily at children, had a strong adult following as well and continued for 2,956 episodes on WXYZ, the Mutual Network and the NBC Blue/ABC networks until September 3, 1954. Repeat broadcasts continued until May 25, 1956.

The show had been created by WXYZ owner George W. Trendle and writer Fran Striker, though who contributed what to the concept is up for debate. The character of the Lone Ranger was believed to have been inspired by Texas Ranger Captain John R. Hughes, to
whom Zane Grey had dedicated a novel in 1915. The show was a major hit, and inspired numerous books, comic books, movie serials, and eventually a truly memorable television series starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels in 1949, lasting until 1957.

The basic story of the Lone Ranger is ingrained in American culture. The unnamed hero was the only survivor of a group of six Texas Rangers who were ambushed by Butch Cavendish and his gang in a canyon named Bryant's Gap. An Indian named Tonto later came upon the massacre, finding one ranger still alive. Tonto nurses the ranger back to health, who then swears to bring Cavendish to justice. To keep Cavendish off his guard, the ranger and Tonto make six graves in Bryant's Gap, and the ranger fashions a black domino mask from a ranger's vest to conceal his identity. He tamed the wild horse Silver for his mount, and after making sure Cavendish paid for his crimes, the Lone Ranger continued to fight for justice in the Old West. He was later joined by his young nephew Dan Reid.

On the original radio series, the Lone Ranger was portrayed by George Seaton, followed by Earle Graser. After Graser's untimely death in 1941, Brace Beemer, the show's former announcer, took over the role. Director James Jewell and announcer Fred Foy also played the lead role for one broadcast each, as did an unknown actor using the name "Jack Deeds." Tonto was played by John Todd throughout the series, being replaced on isolated broadcasts by Roland Parker (who was best known as Kato on The Green Hornet). Other supporting players were primarily regional actors from Detroit and WXYZ staff. Jay Michael (who also starred in Sgt. Preston of the Yukon), Bill Saunders (noted for voicing Butch Cavendish), Paul Hughes, Jane Fae, Rube and Liz Weiss, and future movie star John Hodiak. The part of Dan Reid was played by child actors Bob Martin, James Lipton, and Dick Beals.

Perhaps this is old news to many of you guys, but I can't seem to get this tune out of my head...

In November 1972, Italian pop star Adriano Celentano released a song that hit No. 1 in his home country, despite the fact it wasn't performed in Italian.

It also wasn't performed in English.

In fact, it wasn't performed in any language at all.

The song, called "Prisencolinensinainciusol," was written to mimic the way English sounds to non-English speakers.

Celentano, now 74 years old, says that he wanted to break down language barriers and inspire people to communicate more.
