The Incredible Murder of Cardinal Tosca

Others have been able to provide better recordings of this Canadian radio drama. Read on...

The play was written in the mid 1970s for Theatre New Brunswick, by Alden Nowlan and Walter Learning. A successful tour of Canada followed, and there have been several new productions in Canada and the USA. This radio production was broadcast by the CBC in its Festival Theatre slot on 31 July 1978. Some of the original cast were retained, notably Dan Macdonald as Dr Watson and Vernon Chapman as Professor Moriarty, but Jack Medley was replaced as Sherlock Holmes by John Neville.

Neville, who was then living and working in Canada, had played Holmes in the 1965 film "A Study in Terror" and on Broadway in William Gillette's play "Sherlock Holmes" in 1974/5.

On the download it seemed to stick at the very beginning and wouldn't go past the start. If this didn't happen to anyone else then is my computer Iguess

It's not just you. For some reason the Uploads page seems to destroy individual MP3 files. Rick has suggested that we upload zipped or RAR files, which seem to survive, even if it's a RAR of a single file.

Once again, the innate perversity of inanimate objects. :>)

    • I've uploaded a zipped version of the program to the website.  Let me know if it works.

  • John Neville died on 19 November, aged 86. He excelled at Shakespeare, quickly becoming a leading man at the Old Vic, and was spoken of the natural successor to John Gielgud. In 1972 he moved to Canada, where his most important work was probably as artistic director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. We treasure his performance as Sherlock Holmes in the 1965 film A Study in Terror — and envy those who saw him in William Gillette’s play on Broadway a decade later. Fortunately this radio production of The Incredible Murder of Cardinal Tosca has been preserved.

    In pace requiescat.

    • That's the first I heard of his passing. Thanks Roger.

I was an avid X-Files watcher from the start and always liked seeing his character Well Manicured Man in said show. Then one day he died in a car explosion.

Wasn't he Munchausen in Terry Gilliam's film as well?

    • He was indeed! A fine performance in an otherwise forgettable film.

    • Just last year I rediscovered my cassette tape of the rebroadcast of this that was done at Christmas.  The quality isn't totally wonderful but I think it's a little better than what is on offer here.   I'd be happy to upload it, but the files are much bigger than the 5MB total which is shown here as the maximum.

    • Could you perhaps share it with us via SkyDrive or similar? If it's better quality than the recordings already posted, I think many of us will be very grateful!

    • Here's a link to the recordings in my shared DropBox folder.

Let me know if this works for you.

    • Thanks Sandy

    • I've now uploaded the files for The Incredible Murder of Cardinal Tosca to the "Uploads" section of Times Past and will be deleting the files from my Dropbox in the next day or so.

It's in the Definitive Sherlock Holmes section.
