The Final Solution by Michael Chabon

Bobbie Pike has posted a reading of the captioned work in the AUDIOBOOKS group. Although Holmes is identified only as "the old man" in this book, it's not exactly a work of master detection to determine his identity.

My comments on the audiobook version are in the other group.

  • I've been wondering what Holmes audio might lurk in the other groups as I've only joined the Holmes one so far.
For example like checking the Springbok group to see if it has any Graham Armitage and Kerry Jordan stuff - particularly better encodes maybe seeing as I've read elsewhere that Springbok radio now has a web site that streams some of it's old stuff.
As it is I'm still checking this group for it's encodes against my versions and have some way to go yet. All in good time.

I wouldn't mind an explanation of "a reading of the captioned work". What is the difference?

I quite like the book itself as well as Mitch Cullen's attempt at the 'Holmes in his beekeeper years' book. I thought Laurie R King got off to a good start but then done something in the 2nd book (Monstrous Regiment) that put me off totally. I've just started listening to Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union as well.
    • "The captioned work" refers to the tile IN THE CAPTION of the message. :>)

Chabon is a difficult author to categorize. His works, especially this one, are not straightforward works of standard mystery fiction.

I've read the book and listened to part of the audio. The critical commentary that I quoted describes accurately the difficulties in rendering Chabon's work in audio. Cullin's "A Slight Trick of the Mind" is more like a true Holmes pastiche.

And don't get me started on that woman's destruction of the Holmesian character.
    • I think I'll have to join the group or ask Bobbie if she can post it here. I'm having trouble getting my head around exactly what Bobbie has posted and how it differs from the audio book version I have (if it does in fact differ). I can't even work out if it's a text or an audio file.
If it is just the normal audio book version then forgive me.
    • You are forgiven. :>)
    • I placed a link here for Bobbie. ------------------------------------ Rick
