I came across this several years ago and have never been able to discover its provenance. Several OTR-for-Sale sites claim a date for it, but with no justification. Boris Aplon was a movie and Broadway actor. This presentation sounds like it was presented before a live audience, but I have no idea when or where.

  • Hi! I called on the God of Memory of all things Sherlockian, aka Peter Blau, & he was able to pull this information out of his "crowded box room."

"The Dog That Howled in the Night" (with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce) first aired on Jan. 31, 1944. There was a live recreation of the program (with Boris Aplon and Charles Flynn) performed on Nov. 10, 1989, during the annual convention of SPERDVAC (The Society to Preserve and Encourage Radio Drama Variety and Comedy) at the Viscount Hotel in Los Angeles. It was directed by Ken Greenwald, who worked from a script that lacked commercials and the sign-off; the final patchwork script included an incorrect author credit to Denis Green and Bruce Taylor [Edith Meiser was the author], and an incorrect sign-off announcement that the next week's program would be "The Haunting of Sherlock Holmes".

Thanks for posting the file! I did a live version of this show w/ the Red Throated League (a sub-society of the Norwegian Explorers) many years ago. It's fun to hear another go @ it. -Karen, aka themadblonde
    • I suspected it was SPERDVAC! Thanks for confirming it.
    • Hey, I just used the only intelligence I ever display & passed it along to someone smarter. ;-)
    • One can nevcer know all the answers. One need only know where to get them.
