The Case of the Great Detective
presented by Bob Dickson
BBC Radio Scotland 1987
Duration approx. 28 minutes

Celebrating the centenary of A Study in Scarlet.

Guests include:
Owen Dudley Edwards
Dame Jean
Bill Mitchell
Stanley Mackenzie
Prof. Alan Watson (forensics)
Sue Brown (Sherlock Holmes' secretary Abbey National employee)
Dennis Collins

Dame Jean, who seemed to prefer her father's other books more than Holmes, mentions going to see the play of The Speckled Band. There follows a clip, approx one minute, of The Speckled Band. Does anybody know where it comes from? I'm not saying this performance of The Speckled Band is something rare and not circulating widely (although it could be). I just don't recognise it "off the top of my head". The clip starts around 16:35 with Dame Jean talking immediately before the clip.

  • Hi Jake,

The Speckled Band is the BBC production of 17th May 1945. Finlay Currie is Watson and Sir Cedric Hardwicke is Holmes.

    • Aah, of course. Thanks.
