The Blue Carbuncle read by Basil Rathbone

A nice early Christmas present, considering the actual story, from otrplus member Lindy.
Recently I found out that my collection of Holmes readings by Basil Rathbone wasn't complete and after pointing this out recently on another forum somebody (Lindy) has located the missing piece. At least I think it's the only missing piece?*

After looking at all the releases on various web sites I noticed that I was missing The Blue Carbuncle. I've checked a lot of places that offer these readings but they all miss The Blue Carbuncle. We have a discussion here on Times Past dedicated to these readings already but that doesn't have the story either. I was going to just dump this 'new' reading into that discussion but thought it might be easily missed - and sometimes you just want to shout it from the rooftops right?

Lindy has ripped the story from the vinyl itself. I have uploaded the 256k mp3 rip to my folder dedicated to these readings on my 4Shared account. The rip is about 77MB. The folder also contains the two Voice On Record podcasts - a podcast dedicated to interesting old vinyl. The file names of the 2 podcasts are self-explanatory but there's a txt file in the folder if you want to know more. The podcast's 45th show aired Stories of Sherlock Holmes vol 1 and the 53rd show featured vol 2.

OK here's the link to the 4Shared folder.

Basil Rathbone reads Sherlock Holmes

Here is a list of the releases of these stories. One question I can't answer yet - were some of the stories recorded more than once?*

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Five (5) record set, 16 rpm, Audio Books GL-611, 1958. Basil Rathbone reads "A Scandal in Bohemia," "The Red-Headed League," "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," and "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle."

The Final Problem: 1958 by Audio Book Company Records USA

Stories of Sherlock Holmes vol 1: "The Speckled Band" and "The Final Problem" - Caedmon Records TC 1172, 1963.

Stories of Sherlock Holmes vol 2: "The Redheaded League" - Caedmon TC 1208 , 1966.

Stories of Sherlock Holmes vol 3: "A Scandal in Bohemia" - Caedmon TC 1220, 1967.

Stories of Sherlock Holmes vol 4: "Silver Blaze" - Caedmon TC 1240, 1967.

Sherlock Holmes Soundbook: "The Speckled Band", "The Final Problem", "The Redheaded League", "A Scandal in Bohemia" and "Silver Blaze" - Caedmon Records SBR 107, 1977

  • Jake's link is no longer active, unfortunately. However, it's been a long time since I posted anything here, so you should now be able to access all six of Basil Rathbone's canonical readings at https://1drv.ms/f/s!AsXldHd9ndaQgQd_Lz7yTxP28CRQ

The Compliments of the Season to all!

  • Well I didn't expect these so soon - Lindy has finished ripping the other 3 stories.

I've done a little house keeping on the folder. There's now a subfolder titled 1958 rips. It has all 4 stories of the 1958 set at 128k. The original rip of The Blue Carbuncle, the reason for me starting this discussion, is a 256k rip and I have now renamed it so '1958-The Blue Carbuncle 256k'. I've moved it into the 1958 rips folder. I've also moved and renamed the jpegs. They are not new - just the ones that I uploaded originally.

I've passed on a thanks from the Times Past members.

    • Thanks Jake, and thanks to Lindy. This set is real find.
  • I had a message from Lindy regarding rips of the other 3 stories (SCAN, REDH, SPEC) in the set. It's a little time consuming apparently but will be done so watch this space.
  • Thanks.  It is always great to hear Rathbone again.
  • Nice catch Douglas. It looks like some more investigating is needed. I added some asterix in the first paragraph next to 'missing piece' and later after the 4Shared link next to 'more than once' but at the time I didn't want to go into it anymore. I didn't want to turn in into a wall of text. I didn't go into the 221B poem for the same reason.

Rathbone died in 1967 so it's possible the Caedmon releases in the 1960s were new recordings. The Caedmon stories that also appeared in the original 1958 set (SCAN, REDH, SPEC) could also be abridged versions of the 1958 set as well. So if you wanted to work out if the Caedmon releases were new recordings it wouldn't be as easy as checking the durations of the stories.

Before I forget - I have asked Lindy for rips of the complete set - the one from which BLUE came from. I used the cover image of the set above and a larger version of it and the back image jpegs are in the 4Shared folder.

Hopefully Lindy will come through and then we can compare better.

  • Fascinating! Thank you, Jake.

  • Thanks a lot Jake.  The Blue Carbuncle is one of my favorite stories from "The Canon" and I especially enjoy it this time of year.  Now, if only someone would unearth the Rathbone/Bruce episode of Carbuncle from 1944!  Thanks again.

  • so many thanks, Rathbone has the most beautiful voice to listen to
    • Thanks, Jake. I don't think I have any of these in digital form, just old, lost cassettes.
