Robert Hardy reads Sherlock Holmes

Excellent, largely unabridged readings from the Canon, released on the now-defunct Argo label.

The photo has only a tenuous link with Sherlock Holmes. In 1960 Robert Hardy played King Henry V in a splendid BBC TV adaptation of Shakespeare's history plays, "An Age of Kings":

"I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot!
Follow your spirit! And upon this charge
Cry `God for Harry! England! and St. George!'!

  • Thanks for sharing these files. It's a shame the Hardy recordings aren't available on CD.

Here are images for one of the other releases:

    • As Victor Meldrew so memorably said, I don't belieeeeeeve it!

Argo is back in business, and the first set of four stories was released on CD last month:

    • Very interesting, thanks. There are a few (non-Holmes) Argo recordings I'd like to see on CD!

Edit: and now I see why I couldn't find it - Amazon have it listed as a music CD
  • Robert Hardy has a wonderful voice for Doctor Watson. You really feel he's telling you the story face to face.
    • I agree completely. I was listening to one of these on the drive to work today. Remarkable reader!

Thanks, Roger, for improving and expanding my collection.

    • Hardy is amazing, his "War of the Worlds" and "The Time Machine" are spectacular. If anyone is interested, I'll be happy to up them as a thank you to Monsieur Magersfontein for his wonderful gift to us all!
      Bien regards

Thanks for sharing these. I have three sets and did not know there were any others.

One of my three is the case book which has

    Three Gables
    Three Garridebs
    Lion's Mane
    Retired Colourman

Are you going to post these here?

I'm happy to digitise my copy but if you already have it I can save myself the task.

    Best regards

    Steve
    • I'll save you the trouble, Steve, as I do have the rest of the recordings and I shall post them here.

this is very kind of you. I haven't listened to these for some years and I'd forgotten just how good they are. Thank you for digitising and sharing.
