  •   Here is a link to January 1944 Tune In magazine page 24 and 25 article on Rathbone and Bruce.

  • While searching the internet for Sherlock Holmes programs, I came across an interesting claim (I believe made in 2020).  A website for "the Crusade Channel" states:

"The CRUSADE Channel has announced their recent acquisition of the complete collection of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ radio dramas starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. These 220 classic episodes originally aired from 1939 to 1945 on NBC radio, then the Mutual Broadcasting System and are generally recognized as being the best of the genre. "

    the website is https://veritasradionetwork.com/mandell-kramer-presents-sherlock-ho...

This is a subscription service.  The site says they are against "Fake News".  Does anyone know if their claim to have all (or even any) of the missing shows is true?

    • Good call! I just can’t believe that this information has been out there for 18 mths now, and not 1 OTR site has made mention of it until now. I am very surprised that OTRR wasn’t on top of this!

I also wonder how the heck they acquired these eps in the first place?! I thought that the Edith Meiser estate was very fickle about releasing the whole collection, and that aside from what is already circulating, the rest of the eps were basically under lock and key.

I suppose I’m like you and will remain cautiously optimistic until we get more info!
    • Nice, glad to hear they responded! It would be tempting to get a collection of funds together and offer them some money to obtain a flash drive of all the shows lol
    • I had the same thought.  I tried to be direct with my message without telling them what a find they may have.  That would just jack up the price, if they are interested in selling a copy.

    • After perusing the site a little, it looks like this was posted January 11, 2019.  I find it a little odd that all of the Sherlock Holmes OTR episodes they have posted thus far have been ones that were already previously in circulation.  You would think in the span of 18 months, they would've thrown a bone, and posted at least one uncirculated episode.

With that being said, the optimist in me hopes this info is true, as this would be one of the greatest OTR discoveries in many years.  It looks like they are on social media, so I may reach out to them from my Twitter account to further inquire.  Hoping someone on this group has a connection, or perhaps is in the know enough to obtain more info about this claim.  (crosses fingers this is true!)

    • I reached out to them.  The contact link did not work, but when I searched I found "https://crusadechannel.com/contact-us/".

The request I sent yesterday morning was as follows:

I am a fan of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes shows. Your website says you have all 220 shows. Other places only list about 55 shows available. What kind of membership would I need to hear these shows? Are all 220 available to hear now?

      I received a response 2 hours later:

      Dear James,
We have here in studio over 220 shows but we simply cannot house all of them on our PUBLIC server PLUS all the many years and episodes of all our live shows too. Band-with is simply too expensive for that much data. So, we typically keep about 50 shows at a time on our site and we rotate every few months or so.
Thank you for supporting the Crusade Channel!

Yesterday afternoon I followed up with an Email to Candace Church:
Thank you for your quick reply..  Just for clarification,
      1) what level of subscription is needed to review the Sherlock Holmes shows.?
      2) When you say 50 shows, do you mean 50 Sherlock Holmes or a mixture of Sherlock Holmes and your other programs?
      3)  I have only heard 55 different Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes shows, and you state that you have access to all of the 220 Rathbone/Sherlock shows.  Is there a list of Sherlock Holmes shows that you have available for listening?
Thank you again for your response.
No response yet.  I am not sure if they know what they have.  It could be sundry Sherlock Holmes shows.
Any help following up would be appreciated.
    •   I waited, but did not receive a reply, so I emailed again.

Aug 23, 2020 2:28 PM To Candace Church

I had not gotten a response to my last email.  I was hoping to hear from you.  To clarify what I am looking for I have attached a text document listing all of the Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes episodes.  Over one hundred and sixty of the 220 shows are not currently available for listening.  The list shows an "na" before all unavailable episodes.  I would be interested to hear if you have access to any of these "na" shows.  Note that some titles may be reused, but the shows are different.
(NOTE:  the attachment was a copy of the Basil Rathbone part of the "Jerry Haendiges Vintage Radio Logs")
I received the following reply from Ms. Church
      Dear James,
I have NO CLUE what Mike and Justin put in rotation. I am forwarding this email along to both of them as I don’t deal in programing.
      Thank you,
    • Thanks for the update Jim.  I looked at all of the Sherlock Holmes shows that they have broadcasted over the past year, and every single one is an ep that is already in circulation.  Unfortunately I am starting to doubt the validity of their claim, but hopefully those guys will respond to you with more info.

I am surprised none of the other Sherlockians on here have responded about this?  Surely someone must have a connection over at OTRR or elsewhere who could shed more light on this.  It just seems to me that if all 220 episodes were found, someone somewhere in the Sherlockian world would have heard something....

Still keeping my fingers crossed though!

  • I'd just like to say thank you to Jake and to Anson for providing not only the shows but the great information behind the shows. I was a little daunted when I looked at the amount of pages in this group but it has been a real education.

Of course I knew of the Rathbone/Bruce version from when I first started collecting OTR and the Movies. The duo are my personal favourites as the movies were shown on BBC2 quite regularly as I was growing up, so when I got to hear them do more than just the 14 movies I was in heaven. My interest had been peaked again when I found a streaming radio station that whilst claiming to be a general Holmes station it has only seemed to play RB shows (not that I am complaining of course).

Anyway, I just wanted to say Thank You and I seem to have wandered off on a tangent.

    All The Best

    Paul
