Peter Cushing's complete RNIB Return Of reading

I came across this on a torrent website and I suspect I'm about to type a waffling wall of text to go with it.

After the death of Peter Cushing's wife, Helen, in 1971 he wanted to work, thinking it would be the best therapy, so in the same year he contacted RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) offering his services as a reader for their audiobooks. The Return of Sherlock Holmes was one of those.

For years that was the only way to hear it. Via the RNIB. Around 2010 Bafflegab, after coming to some kind of agreement with RNIB I think, started to release the stories. The first collection, volume 1, included the first 4 stories. A few years later we got 4 more stories in volume 2. Since then, nothing.

I actually fired off an email to Bafflegab sometime between the releases of the 2 volumes to find out when the rest would be released. I also said in the email that I found the price for the 4 stories quite high when compared to other similar readings where the buyer would get the whole collection (a complete reading of The Return of Sherlock Holmes) for the same price. Between you, me and the rest of the world/internet I got the impression, from the person who sent the reply I received to my email, that he/she agreed with something else I had said in my email, that is I really felt they should of released all the stories at the same time.

I came across this complete collection this week. There was no information with it so I have no idea where it came from exactly but it must of been through the RNIB originally. I don't know what format the RNIB use. The files here are mp3s. A couple of things I did notice. There's an intro before the first story that says funding for it's conversion comes from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which, after some checking, I found was set up in 1994. Before that we hear that the book has been made accessible by the Visually Impaired Persons Act 2002. These statements are not by Peter Cushing, although the one about the Heritage Lottery Fund might of been; he died the same year - 1994. Some of the intro is by Cushing though. I guess the RNIB have updated the collection over the years.

      Thanks again.

  • You all missed this 10 months ago?

    • I randomly got a notification from the E-Book Group and it reminded me to check in with the Sherlock Holmes Group. I confess to absentmindedness.

    • So did I! Thank you, Jake - better late than never.
