Hobbs & Shelley 4Extra repeats

Recently, well - starting October 2017, BBC's 4 Extra have been repeating the 7 series of Hobbs and Shelley episodes in order for the first time. Some of them sound better than what I had. For some of them there's little difference. By October 2017 4Extra had started using 320kbit aac/m4a whereas before that the earlier airings, see next paragraph, were 128kbit.

Before this there had been repeats of Hobbs and Shelley episodes on 4 extra and Radio 7 before the rebranding. There was a series introduced by Nick Utechin. The BBC had also released 2 collections of stories on CD, the first of them also released on cassette.

About a week or two back 4 Extra reached the last episode, His Last Bow, of the last (7th) series.

My plan was to replace all my old versions on Onedrive with these new 4 Extra versions. The thing is I actually missed the first series in October 2017. Obviously I have the actual 1st series shows from other sources, just not from the 4Extra October 2017 repeat. I have series 2 through 7 from 4Extra. I'm hoping that 4Extra repeat all these series and when they do I'll grab the first series.

If you go to the Onedrive Hobbs and Shelley folder now there are 2 subfolders. One has the novels. The other has series 1. There are also 2 text files. One has a list of when the episodes (novels and short stories) were first broadcast, including those that I don't have a recording of. The other text file has URL/links for the 4Extra episodes. I've had to do it this way as I don't have room for the 4Extra versions on my Onedrive. All the links in the text file are below as well. I have uploaded them to my Mediafire account.

OK, time for some links.

Mediafire Hobbs and Shelley series from 4Extra.
Each series is a zip file. Makes downloading easier.
The first link is a folder link showing the zip files. You can download the zips from this page.

Mediafire 4Extra Sherlock Holmes short stories

If you have problems with the above link then here are direct links to the zip files.
Remember, I don't have 4Extra series 1 (yet!). If you want the mp3s of series 1 they are on my Onedrive.

Series 2

Series 3

Series 4

Series 5

Series 6

Series 7

Next is the link to my Onedrive folder of Hobbs and Shelley files.
See the last paragraph above, before the links, to explain what you'll find therein. In short, a folder for the novels, another folder for series 1 and 2 text files.

If you are wondering what this Onedrive thing is. Here's the link to the root folder.

I was going to close here but with all this talk of the 7 series it might help if I put a list here of the episodes. This doesn't include the Children's Hour shows of which no recordings of are known to exist.

  • Here is a link to the zip file of Series 1 at 320kbit.

    • Thanks Jake!  I really appreciate the upgrade here....I find the 320 kbps files make a huge difference with enjoying these shows, especially with a good pair of headphones!

      -Scott

  • This is simply amazing to have all of these in 320 kbps.  You had mentioned in a more recent post in this thread that some of these files sound like they may have well been 64 kbps.  The vast majority of these sound fantastic though, and and I thank you for the time and effort in making them available here.  I have collected the Hobbs and Shelley shows for years, and I remember most of my files back in the day being inferior quality, at 16 kbps or 32 kbps bit rates.  What a difference these BBC audio rips make!

    Thanks again,

    Scott

    • BBC Four Extra has started repeating the first season of short stories of the Hobbs & Shelley canon. I do wish they would do the novels, which as far as I can tell, haven't been done.

    • Yes, I've noticed.
I missed series 1 the first time round in 2017. Once I've downloaded all 6 episodes of series 1 I will upload them, to go with the 320kbit shows of series 2 through 6.
I did ask the BBC last year if they had the one-off Black Peter 1961 and their answer was no.

    • Do you know if the BBC has versions of the novels?

    • I haven't asked the BBC.
I can't find it now but in one of the threads in this group I mentioned something that was in a recent issue (last year) of the Sherlock Holmes UK Society's District Messenger pdf. It said that the BBC were looking at airing the novels. But that's about it. I don't know if you caught that.

    • Yes, I recall seeing that message about the novels. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Hi Jake

These may be of no use to you as they're only 128 kbps Freeview recordings, but here's my R4xtra series 1 repeats.

    • Thanks Charles.
I'm downloading them for myself as they will give me an idea of what they are like.
I found that for some of the episodes on 4X they were better quality than what I had and 320kbit made a difference. For others, the 320kbit might as well of been something like 64kbit.
