  • Excellent! Tim Pigott-Smith is one of the growing number of actors who went from playing Watson (in his case to John Wood's Holmes, with the Royal Shakespeare Company) to playing Holmes.

    I remember Bert Coules speaking very highly of Roy Apps' script (rightly so), and saying that it gave him a bit of a headache when he came to dramatise "The Valley of Fear" himself, because he didn't want to duplicate what Apps had already done. The result, of course, was one of his most daring adaptations, ranking with "The Lion's Mane" in being very different in narrative approach from the original story but absolutely faithful to the story itself.
