John Stanley / Alfred Shirley
1947-48 Season
First Show: Sep 28, 1947 Last Show: Jun 20, 1948
Number Shows: 39 Audition Show: none
Series Description:
After Basil Rathbone left the Sherlock Holmes series after the 1946-
1947 series, Nigel Bruce remained as Watson opposite Tom Conway as
Holmes. Although Tom Conway was a good choice for the Holmes
character, the radio audience didn't accept him. So, in the 1948-
1949 season, again a change was made. This time John Stanley was
cast in the role of the great detective with Alfred Shirley as his
Watson.
The series was once again on Mutual, after a 1 season move to the ABC
network. Originated from Hollywood, the series was heard on WOR, New
York, Mutual's flagship station, Sundays from 7:00 to 7:30 PM.
The series continued to be sponsored, this time by Trimount Clothing
Co. (Clipper Craft Clothes). The producer / director was Basil
Loughrane. The announcer was Cy Harrice. The engineer was Don
Williamson Sound was done by Hal Reid and music by Albert Buhrman.
Writer for the series was Edith Meiser, who had written Sherlock
Holmes scripts from the very beginnings of Sherlock Holmes radio
adventures in 1930. In fact, she wrote all scripts up to mid-1945.
John Stanley and Alfred Shirley played the roles of Holmes and Watson
for one season of 39 shows. The next season would again see changes
in an effort to keep the series alive.

Wow thank you so much Douglas. Being the completist I am with OTR, I also wonder if "The Return of the Jack Of Diamonds" from 1948-04-25 is out there in circulation? Jerry Haendiges' OTR Log lists the episode as existing, but does mention that it was transferred from badly damaged discs. At any rate, I would still be interested in hearing it, regardless of the quality.
Thanks again,
Scott
