Roy Marsden and John Moffat

Roy Marsden / John Moffatt Version 1987 Series Description: In 1987, Daedalus Productions in the UK, produced a series of 24 full cast adaptations of stories from the Sherlock Holmes canon. They were originally intended to be heard by passengers on British Airways long-haul flights. Six of the shows were chosen to be aired over the BBC's World Service. In 1990, they were released on cassette by the Talking Tape Company in six two-cassette boxes. Each box offered four different stories from the full production. The adaptations never aired but have made their way into the hands of many Old-Time Radio show collectors. The part of Sherlock Holmes was played by Roy Marsden with the part of Dr. Watson played by John Moffatt. John Moffatt is no stranger to radio and, in fact, played the role of Holmes, Watson and Inspector Gregson on radio. He's probably best known for his role as Hercule Poirot in the BBC's presentation of many of Agatha Christie's novels on radio. Roy Marsden appeared in Granada's "The Last Vampyre" with Jeremy Brett. Unlike most full cast adaptations, these featured mostly Dr. Watson's narration interspersed with acted sequences. This technique is quite effective especially since it mimics how most people perceive the stories from the canon. The stories were dramatized by Grant Eustace and were directed by Michael Bartlett. Joss Sanglier was the engineer for the shows, composed and played the music for the shows. Elizabeth Fellows also played along with Joss Sanglier. • Thanks all,

I first encountered this series when the local library had 2 sets. I recorded those but was determined to find the originals of all six. It took a while and lots of searching on Ebay before I got almost all and then of course someone sold the entire set at once so I grabbed that.

These were only transferred to digital in the last couple of years.

I am very glad these are new to this site. I sampled the versions you had before and happily these are way better.

Quick question I also have the most complete ever audio version of The Hound of the Baskervilles with Nicol WIlliamson as Holmes. Also a HQ sound version. Do you guys have this or can I place that somewhere?

    • Please open a new thread and post these. they HAVE to be better than the dreadful VBR set that i have now. :>)

I am curious about the statement "most complete ever audio version". What makes it more complete?

Caedmon issued this recording twice. the first was on three cassettes; the second had only two. Which version is the source for your encodes?

      "I have no data yet."

Pop quiz: In which three Canonical tales does Holmes remind us that  ..."it is a capital mistake to theorize"?

    • Most complete in that even though it's a audio drama it's 3 hours long and doesn't really cut anything out that everyone else like the BBC etc cut down because they  don't have the time in 90 minutes to 2 hours that they get.

It's HQ in the sense that it's directly from the tapes and like this set at 128 kbps albeit with inherent flaws in the recording.

    • Thanks!  I'm looking forward to the set. It will certainly be an improvement over the set i now have!

    • I'm certain that it's in STUD. in fact I'd have a little (£10) bet on it, but are there 3 instances? I vaguely recall it being said more than once but that's it. Probably in a short story from Adventures.

Ryan - I already have a nice set of the Talking Tapes tales but I'd like to hear the Nicol Williamson. From what you said I can't understand if you have 2 sets - the "most complete ever audio version" and "a HQ sound version". Or is the "complete" version also "HQ".

I can't recall if there's a discussion going for the Nicol Williamson HOUN release already here on TP. I have it as 4 mp3s with an 80k bitrate, 22.05 kHz sample rate.

    • No there isn't a thread yet that I can find Jake.  Ryan, please start a new thread with the Hounds posts, we would love to have them.  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------  Ric

  • Hi,

I am new to this site and noticed this thread.

I tracked down all 6 releases of this collection and transferred them to MP3.

Each story is individually available on MediaFire. Also included are the scans of the tape inserts on first story of each set.

All stories are done at 128kbps.

    • These look interesting. The Media Fire files don't seem to be available any longer. :-(

    • Jim,
From the link at the bottom, drill down through the "UK (no BBC)"" folder to find the folder "Roy Marsden and John Moffatt Sherlock Holmes Collection One-Six".
Six of the episodes were broadcast on the BBC World Service. The quality isn't as good, and I believe they are exactly the same as the cassette rips above, but if you want to have a look, from the link below, drill through the "BBC radio" folder to find the folder "Roy Marsden & John Moffatt Sherlock Holmes BBCWS 1993".
Any problems let me know. I don't check my email every day but at least once a week.
      Jake.

    • Delighted to have these. Thank you, Ryan.
