In “Deep Down,” Reacher is a young Army officer summoned to Washington, D.C. by Military Intelligence to go undercover during a congressional investigation into a new sniper rifle program. Sensitive information from closed hearings is being leaked to a foreign power, and the leak has been narrowed down to four promising female staff officers on the fast track.
Reacher’s cover is that he is a sniper brought in as a subject‑matter expert, but his real task is to socialize with the four women, assess them, and identify which one is passing secrets. He is warned that the mission is “just talking,” but that the person responsible may try to derail or eliminate the investigation.
