Childhood's End - Arthur C Clarke

This is absolutely wonderful - but the quality of this recording is very poor. Hoping someone else has a better quality version? Uses some amazing music by Richard Strauss from his 4 Last Songs.

Childhood's End by Arthur C.Clarke
Dramatized by Tony Mulholland
Directed at Pebble Mill by Brian Lighthill
Music composed and performed by Jeff Mearns
BBC Radio 4 - Classic Serial - 02.11.1997 - 09.11.1997
2 x 60mins episodes

Alone many miles above the Earth, Jan Rodricks, the last surviving human, is witnessing the end of the world. As he watches, he records for the benefit of history how mankind was doomed...
The massive spaceships appeared over every city on Earth, bringing the Overlords, a seemingly benign race vastly superior in technology and intelligence. Led by the enigmatic Karellen, they promised a new age of peace and prosperity, and with the help of UN Secretary General Stormgren, they eradicated poverty, disease and war. But contentment has its price...
As the years pass, culture, science and religion start to die, and there are those who question the road down which the Overlords are leading them. For it seems the apparently benevolent and omnipotent masters of the Earth are themselves only the servants of a greater power: a power they have no choice but to obey...

Steven Pacey stars as Jan Rodricks with Peter Jeffrey as Karellen in this powerful BBC Radio 4 dramatization of Arthur C. Clarke's apocalyptic vision of the future. First published in 1953, Arthur C. Clarke's tale of the evolution and eventual end of humanity has come to be seen as one of the great SF works.

  • Thank You.  The Site search is actually quite nice now that I changed the classifications of the groups.  The Private search was not as good.  I am glad i did this last night all night long because i couldn't sleep.  Pain gets really intense sometimes and is always present in somewhat lower intensity.  ------------------------------  R

    • That doesn't sound so good. Hope it eases.

    • It is called RSD.  I got it from a nerve injury 14 years ago and the the pain has been constant 24/7 since then.  All that can be done is purely symptomatic Treatment .  There is no fix for it.  Thank You for the sentiment though.  That is how i have the time for all this Uploading and administration etc is that i am totally disabled from it. ---------------------------------  R

    • Is this what you are looking for? How about 160K?  Second part below on linked page.  I think the search will need a little time to find it all.  I opened them today so 99% of Times past posts hit the server all at once within a half hours time.  I think we may have to back-up the Site search with a manual one for a few days.  LOL  -------------  R

Childhood's End that the search can't find LINK

    • Thanks - needed a better quality version.

Thought I had looked manually for it too - just not very good at it.

    • I asked them to tweak it.  The search only found yours. LOL  -----------------------  R

    • Also, I have been testing the search.  I think until they reboot it at the end of the week we ought to either lay off the classic stuff or commit to a manual search.  The search appears to only be pulling up the recent stuff, maybe past year, nothing archaic from the bowels of the server.  My guess is it needs to do whatever to get the info into the search.  After all I dumped a lot into a search that was rarely used on this site in about 1/2 hour all of Times Past's Private groups.  You are maybe talking a Tb of info or more it needs to assimilate and alphabetise.  I will jot off a work order to maintenance to maybe cycle the site's info or whatever they have to do to get the info into the site search but if they do it as fast as they are fixing to Private search I don't hope to see an improvement until they go down for normal maintenance sometime later in the week.   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  R

    • Yes - it can take some time to index a site for search.

My manual searches haven't proved to be too successful so far...
