Actually, this is a four-part adaptation of the SECOND book in Susan Cooper's series. The Beeb also adapted the first book. I have a really poor copy of that one which I'll post if no one jumps in first.
Here's a bit more info:
The Dark is Rising
Susan Cooper
Broadcast date unknown.
This is an adaptation of the second book in the series known collectively as "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper. A very popular series of children's fantasy tales set in England and steeped in Celtic mythology.
Although made for children the stories are indeed quite dark and may be unsuitable for some younger listeners. Adults should accompanied by a child :)
The five books of the series are:
1. Over Sea and Under Stone
2. The Dark is Rising
3. Greenwitch
4. The Grey King
5. Silver on the Tree
A very helpful website on the subject of Susan Cooper is

meant to type 2 not 1 ---- thnx for link! --- I think the Beeb titled the incomplete sequence The Daek Is Rising but why I think that I cannot recall
The original Cooper series is called by that name by her fans. :>)
Thank You Reuben. I thought it was already here and it was but the link is dead. I added a link to here from the old post. Very nice post and glad you noticed the link was dead so it was in fact not here. --------- Rick
