A powerful and compelling story, it explores love from its first tentative beginnings, through to passionate sensuality and eventual tragic disillusionment. Adapted for radio by Lavinia Greenlaw, this classic serial brings Chaucer's language up to date for a modern audience, while remaining true to his original poetic intention. Troilus ...... Sunday 26 April 2009 Part 1 - After seeing the beautiful widow Criseyde at the temple in Troy, Troilus falls instantly in love with her. Inexperienced in love, he is unable to act on his feelings and locks himself in his room to compose love songs. Pandarus, worried for his friend, eventually persuades Troilus to tell him why he is so miserable and is delighted to hear that the cause is Troilus' love for his niece Criseyde. Worried about her reputation, Criseyde is at first reluctant to enter into a relationship with Troilus. After much cajoling and manipulation, she reluctantly comes around to the idea. Pandarus is frustrated that the relationship is moving too slowly and engineers a complex plan to get Criseyde and Troilus in bed together. Sunday 03 May 2009 Part 2 - Criseyde's Uncle Pandarus has been the matchmaker for the Trojan hero Troilus and young widow Criseyde. But what will happen when Criseyde is handed over to the Greeks at the gates of Troy to join her 'traitor' father? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Laurence Joyce, Radio Times reviewer: A good tale is always worth the telling, and that's why, over the years, various writers have been attracted to the story of Troilus and Cressida. Chaucer's version (Troilus and Criseyde) was not the first: he got it from Boccaccio, who got it from someone else. And now Lavinia Greenlaw has taken Chaucer's romance of courtly love, ironed out the language and the poetry, and made it into a Classic Serial. We're seven years into the siege of Troy, and Troilus, a Trojan prince, has fallen in love with Criseyde, a beautiful young widow. Her uncle, Pandarus, sensing Troilus's inexperience and Criseyde's caution ("I have to think of my reputation"), plays the matchmaker and sets up a lovers' tryst in his spare room. It all seems too easy for Troilus, everything's laid on for him. If it all goes pear-shaped in part two, my sympathies are with Criseyde. One of Two
