1.3: Socially ambitious Arabella Trefoil becomes engaged to a solicitor with a sizeable estate - but soon finds her eye drawn to the wealthier and more exciting Lord Rufford. Encouraged by her overbearing mother, she tries to woo the nobleman while keeping her engagement a secret.

2.3: Having now been kissed twice by Lord Rufford, Arabella decides to escalate her plans to secure his hand in marriage - but must also find a way to break her engagement with John.

3.3: Lord Rufford runs away from Arabella, but she remains determined to marry him - until a piece of distressing news stops her in her tracks.
