Henry VIII by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher
N.B. The full name of the play is: "The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eighth"
BBC Radio 3: Drama on 3
Broadcast: Sunday 19th April 2009 @ 6:00 p.m.
A rare chance to hear William Shakespeare and John Fletcher's history play depicting the life of Henry VIII, broadcast to mark the 500th anniversary in 2009 of the king's accession to the throne aged just 17. It tells the story of the king's struggle to have his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled and the catastrophic fall of the all-powerful
Cardinal Wolsey. The play opens with the arrest for treason of the Duke of Buckingham.
Thomas Wolsey wields enormous power as Cardinal of York and Lord Chancellor of England. So great is his power that it rivals even his enormous appetite for food. The upright Duke of Buckingham, who serves as Lord High Constable, worries about Wolsey’s power and his influence on King Henry VIII. So he decides to warn Henry that Wolsey is bad news. Wolsey, however, has already envenomed the king's ear against Buckingham, telling Henry that Buckingham covets the crown and means to win it. It is true that Buckingham would inherit the crown if Henry dies without an heir, but it is not true that Buckingham has kingly ambitions. Nevertheless, the king's officers arrest him for treason.... The play also charts the rise of reformer Thomas Cranmer and the christening of the future Queen, young Elizabeth.
Adapted for radio by Jeremy Mortimer from the 1613 play, "Henry VIII" by William Shakespeare in collaboration with John Fletcher.

Note: Time in this play is compressed, making events appear as if they took place over a short period. In fact, they took place between 1520 and 1533, the year of the birth of Henry VIII's daughter Elizabeth, the future Queen of England. The sequence of events in the play is unreliable. For example, in the play, Wolsey is still alive when Henry marries Anne Boleyn. In reality, he was dead for three years before Henry married Anne.
