The fishermen of Leigh-on-Sea are famous for their heroic attempts to rescue British soldiers stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk. A memorial in St Clement's churchyard stands as a reminder of their bravery and sacrifice. A small but active fleet of cockle boats keeps alive the reputation of Leigh as the centre of the world cockling trade. The picturesque cockle sheds are home to many old Leigh families who have followed this trade for generations.

In this radio ballad, made for the Essex Radio folk programme in 1982, members of the Osborne, Cotgrove and Meddle families talk about cockling as a job, a tradition and a way of life. Their reminiscences, recorded by Dennis Rookard, are enhanced by the songs of Jack Forbes.
