A series of comic supernatural outpourings supposedly written by Thomas
Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually the pen-name of Rev Richard
Harris Barham.

The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in Bentley's
Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. The legends were
illustrated by John Leech and George Cruikshank. They proved immensely
popular and were compiled into books published in 1840 and 1843. They
remained popular through the Victorian era but have since fallen out of
fame.

As a priest at the Chapel Royal, Barham was not troubled with strenuous
duties and he had ample time to read and compose stories. Although based
on real legends and mythology, they are usually deliberately humorous
parodies or pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry.

Danny Scott, Radio Times reviewer: First published as a series in
Bentley's Miscellany in 1837 The Ingoldsby Legends proved frighteningly
popular with the ghost-loving Victorian public. Penned by Richard Harris
Barham writing as Thomas Ingoldsby, the Legends blended surreal whimsy
with the supernatural, and high-minded verbosity with puerile one-liners
- imagine Poe scripting an episode of The Phantom Raspberry Blower for
The Two Ronnies. Brilliantly bonkers.

    • Feeling a little bit addled that I missed these !  I'm starting to wonder what other gems I've passed by...

    • There are gems all over the place.  You are a member of the only OTR sharing site that a good percentage of the links from day one are still active.  Most sites the links are dead within a week or 2.  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Rick

    • And for that reason - I will be hopelessly devoted...!
