The Best Laid Plans by Mark Daydy

In 1885, God fell asleep. In 2015 he awoke to discover that his idiot servant, Smallbone, had accidentally handed out God's plans for the next millennium when he was only meant to hand out plans for the next century.

A thousand years of leisurely human progression has been crammed into the last 130. No wonder the human race is so stressed. They weren't even meant to have pocket calculators until 2550.

Not only that, but God's blueprints should have run out in the mid-80s, but people kept going. Humans are now inventing things God never even dreamed of – mobile phones, wireless internet and Made In Chelsea.

Smallbone is cast down to Earth in human form by God, tasked with the dauntingly vague mission of 'reversing the last thirteen decades of human progression'. The problem is that Smallbone is the world's biggest fan - he loves modern technology and his new human body, and he becomes distracted by everything that he's meant to destroy. Especially escalators.

1.4: A Slight Admin Error. Smallbone learns to use his new human body and ends up taking on the CEO of Grapefruit, a powerful technology company that wants to knock down the local library to expand their store.

2.4: Pedal Power. Smallbone is set to lead the gang in staging a cycling protest against the building of a new multi-story car park. That is, if he doesn't get too distracted by the car showroom on the way to the protest.

3.4: Would Like to Meet. Smallbone and the gang set up a speed dating event in an attempt to raise money for the church roof, as the angel hopes to find true love.

4.4: Caution: Angel at Work. Smallbone gets a job in a supermarket and tries his hand at customer service. But when a fully automated, super-brain self-service checkout system threatens the workers' jobs, Smallbone finds himself leading the protest against the store.

  • Thank you!

  • Dear William.

Thanks so much for this offering.  I have not heard it and I am looking forward to hearing Ardal since I loved him in the 2000 series My Hero.

    Thanks,Bob

  • Thanks Alot

    • Thanks for sharing

    • Listened to this series last night. I couldn't help thinking that Ardal O'Hanlan's character and all his best  lines had been lifted directly from his earlier roles as the naïve socially inept bemused misfit in My Hero and Father Ted.

  • Thanks! Sounds fascinating.
