Comic thriller adapted from the book by Mark Tavener, BBC Radio Crime Correspondent George Cragge investigates a spree of bizarre murders involving bankers and pound coins.

5/7 A crucial by-election result is due, as the murders continue - but George is on the case.

Episode 6

6/7 George is due in court - and BBC controllers keep on plotting to axe the Director General.

Episode 7

7/7 Plotting at the BBC reaches a climax, and George gets closer to nailing the serial killer.

Cast includes Michael Williams as George Cragge, a seasoned, hard-drinking BBC crime correspondent of the old school who is contacted by the killer, and Barry Foster (star of Van der Valk in the 1970s) as the policeman leading the enquiry; Stephen Fry and John Bird played the radio controllers.

  • This is the first of four radio series based on Tavener's novels. There are also several TV shows written by Tavener and a TV series written by others "based on" his work.

    In addition, the characters played by Fry and Bird were spun off into a radio series of their own, called Absolute Power. This also spawned a TV series, I believe,
