Cabin Pressure

Cabin Pressure is a radio series written by John Finnemore. Its first series was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2008.

To my mind, this is the best comedy on radio.  As ensemble humor, it ranks

up there with Barney Miller.

I'm not sure of the status.  BBC7 rebroadcast the first two seasons and hinted at a third.

Benedict Cumberbach has moved on to the new Sherlock Holmes in modern dress.

Finnemore, who plays the cheerful dimwit Arthur, seems to be the brains behind the show.

Just as it takes a sober man to play a drunk, it takes a very, very clever person

to effectively play someone stupid.

  • Well I do not know how that happened but I seem to have missed the whole of series 3 of this usually great comedy and now those links have gone so if anyone can provide them again ~ thank you.

Oh I think I can retrieve some from the iPlayer perhaps I can catch them - well some of them anyway

    • Cabin Pressure series 4 has started on BBC Radio 4.

    • The scripts are as good as ever but the injected laughter is really annoying there is no subtlety at all.

    • I am not 100% sure but I believe the show is recorded live. have a look at this link and see what you think:

    • I know it's recorded with a live studio auidence, cause I was one of them (but not at the episode in the report I'm afraid).

    • This series was recorded on 3 dates, with 2 shows per day, all earlier this year.

I applied for tickets to each day but drew a blank. I'm not completely sure I'd have been able to go if I had been successful - work and fact I no longer live in (or even that close to) London might have made it difficult, but I'd have given it a go. My girlfriend doesn't really listen to a lot of radio - but she too loves Cabin Pressure!

    • Great website and report.  I am saving reading the rest of it until I have a chance to listen to the series.

In my opinion Cabin Pressure, along with Clare in the Community, are the best in radio comedy I have heard in years and I go all the way back to what is now known as Old Time Radio (as a kid we just called it radio).  These BBC comedies just go to show that radio can be the best medium possible for all types of entertainment and especially comedy  when the writing and acting is THIS GOOD!.

    • You only call it radio? I still call it the wireless! At least I don't have to wait for those pesky valves to warm up now...

    • Hello Paul

did you get the third series? If not I have it.

  • I am a big fan of Allam - his Falstaff last year was a joyous thing. I'm rather stunned it lost out to Floating on the Audio Awards though. I don't like the short play anyway, but how could it possibly surpass Douglas Richardson divebombing Baloo!
