Buried Alive by Arnold Bennett

Buried Alive
by Arnold Bennett
dramatised by James Duckett
Produced by Anthony Cornish in Birmingham
Broadcast: 11th March 1972 (Saturday Night Theatre)

In this funny tale, Henry Leek, valet to the renowned painter Priam Farll, dies and they are mistakenly identified as the other. The valet is buried with pomp and circumstance in Westminster Abbey while Priam poses as Leek. Hang on!  The title is entirely metaphorical; this is not a book for lovers of the macabre. It is a tragi-comic satire about identity, inhibition, love, the meaning and value of art, and...more

With David King [Priam Farll], Jane Hilton [Alice Chalice], David March [Whitney C. Whitt, an American Art Connoisseur / Mr. Oxford, an Agent for an Art Collector], Jane Freeman [Mrs. Leek], Paul Chapman [Henry Leek], Anthony Woodruff [Dr. Cashmore / Mr. Crepitude, K.C.], Simon Carter [Mr. Vodrey, K.C.], Philip Garston-Jones [The Judge], George Woolley [Duncan Farll], Frank Morley [Henry Leek, Jr. / Mr. Dockery], Gabrielle Laye [Miss Cohenson / The Shop Assistant], Ursula O'Leary [Lady Sophia], Drew Griffiths [Matthew Leek], and John Rowe [The Narrator].

128/44/mono; sound quality good

Trivia: Bennett's 1908 novel, "Buried Alive: A Tale of These Days", became a stage play called "The Great Adventure" that opened at the Kingsway Theatre, London, in 1913 with great success. Several film versions were made, and in 1968, a stage musical version called "Darling of the Day" led to a Tony Award for Patricia Routledge.
