In 1916 most of the Middle East lay under the domination of the Turkish Empire, with which the Allies were at war. On October 16, there landed at the port of Jeddah a slight blond, Anglo-Irish soldier 'filled with the idea of freeing people,' and who had chosen the Arabs as the 'only suitable ones left.' The soldier's name was T E Lawrence; later to be known as Lawrence of Arabia.
In his play Ross, Terence Rattigan presents us with a sensitive, penetrating, and highly dramatic study of this strange, enigmatic soldier-artist. Why did Lawrence seek oblivion in the Royal Air Force at the very height of his fame? Why did he wish to destroy the legend which he helped to create? Mr Rattigan supplies some convincing answers.
