The Big Bow Mystery by Israel Zangwill

By Israel Zangwill, dramatised by Robert Messik

The Big Bow Mystery, written in 1891, is the first locked room mystery novel ever published. The story begins with landlady Mrs Drabdump hammering on Inspector Grodman's door -- she's hysterical: she claims that her lodger, Arthur Constant, hero of the working class, has been murdered. When she finally convinces Grodman to take action, they have to break down Constant's door: it's locked and bolted from the inside.

Could Constant have cut his own throat?

Zangwill's style is breezy and sardonic -- he has a bit of fun lampooning Edgar Allen Poe, and his views on Victorian England are vividly satiric -- but he plays fair to his readers with this mystery, and keeps the action, puzzles and plot going at an entertaining clip.
