One Corpse Too Many by Ellis Peters

Dramatised by Alan Downer

In August 1138, King Stephen is besieging rebels loyal to Empress Matilda in Shrewsbury Castle. Aline Siward enters King Stephen's camp to pledge loyalty, even though her brother Giles has sided with Matilda. The castle falls the next morning and King Stephen orders the 94 survivors of the turncoat garrison to be executed that afternoon.
Counting the bodies, Cadfael finds not 94, but 95 - one corpse too many. The additional dead man was strangled, not hanged. Aline finds the body of her brother.
Brother Cadfael has a murder on his hands.
