Reading Between The Lines
Mark Lawson
February 9-13, 2009
The latest and, indeed, last crime mystery by RP Beckford – a best-selling British mystery writer who has recently died – has been sent to the police with an anonymous note saying that the book contains clues to the murder of Beckford's ex-wife three years earlier.
The murder was major news and cast a shadow over the writer's final years. At the time, there were also unkind but unproven rumours that Beckford had a hand in her death.
But, when DI Kate Duncan sets out to investigate, she discovers that not only has no one ever actually met RP Beckford, but no one has solid proof that he is, in fact, dead. Kate begins to understand that she is embroiled in a cat-and-mouse chase – not unlike one of the plots in a Beckford novel. She begins to lose patience when perhaps, not unpredictably, an unusual clue leads the way to the ghostly hand behind the author known as RP Beckford.
Part 1 - When a celebrated writer, RP Beckford-Jones, leaves clues in his final novel implying that his recently deceased wife was murdered, DCI Kate Duncan is forced to look more carefully at the incriminating text.
Part 2 - DCI Kate Duncan investigates the clues in the posthumously-published A Guilty Death.
Part 3 - The investigation begins to bear fruit.
Part 4 - A recluse called John Webster admits to publishing 16 novels under the pseudonym RP Beckford-Jones, but insists that he did not write A Guilty Death.
Part 5 - DCI Kate Duncan begins to believe the reclusive author when he insists that he did not write A Guilty Death.
