By Jeremy Front, based on the novel by Simon Brett.
Locked down with his semi-detached wife Frances, Charles has thrown himself into a new career as a handyman, becoming quite the DIY expert. He's developed muscles, stopped smoking and even cut back on the booze.
Then his agent, Maurice, offers him the chance to get back on stage - and in a West End play, no less. The star, Justin Grover, asked for him specifically: but Charles has reservations. Grover was cocky enough when they were both young hopefuls; now he's the star of a massive TV fantasy series, and the play - a verbatim piece set in a monastery - is dire.
So why has Justin signed up for it? He certainly doesn't need the money, unlike Charles. The cast is drearily male, and before long Charles is hitting the Scotch again. When he drunkenly stumbles over the corpse of a fellow actor, Charles panics, leaving the body to be discovered by someone else. But he soon regrets lying to the police, and driven by guilt and self-preservation, he resolves to find the murderer...
When an actress falls down stairs in the West End theatre where Charles is appearing, his suspicions are aroused. The discovery of a sex-tape on a covert camera in her dressing room only confirms them. But who is the voyeur and potential murderer? Charles sniffs criminality. The game is afoot!
Charles gets a theatre job playing a monk, and murder inevitably follows.
A cast member falls down some stairs, or were they pushed?
Charles tries to discover who hid a camera in Lydia's dressing room.
Charles discovers who is behind the murders at The Aphra Benn theatre.
Cast:
Charles ..... Bill Nighy Frances ..... Suzanne Burden Maurice ..... Jon Glover Lydia ..... Ria Marshall Kit ..... Joseph Ayre Justin ..... Tony Turner Brendan ..... Jonathan Kydd Nina ..... Marilyn Nnadebe Bar manger/D.S.Dalby ..... Stewart Campbell
Charles is once again out of work an event that is made worse by the fact that his mother (played by Geraldine McEwen) has come to stay whilst recovering from an operation; and Frances thinks she may be secret tippler - so it might be a good job if Charles laid off the booze in the run up to Christmas. So when he bumps into old friend, Hugo, who offers him the chance of some voiceover work Charles is doubly happy; some money and a chance to get out of the house. In return Charles agrees to critique Hugo's wife's am-dram group's production of Marat Sade. But the world of amateur dramatics it seems has more drama off stage than on and Charles discovers a dead body.

Dear William
Thanks so much for providing this offering. I enjoy Simon Brett's Charles Paris mysteries so much so I sent him a 'fan' e-mail expressing my joy of hearing that a BBC-4 radio production was commissioned. He replied that a new Charles Paris Mystery will be in the States come this March and after 'A Long Interval' Charles Paris is back! I love the word play and character interaction from these radio plays. Bill Nighy is GREAT! It will also be so NICE to hear the voice of Geraldine McEwan again. Oh how I loved her in 'Mulberry' and I think she was one of the best Miss Marple too. I will save this Charles Paris Mystery for a cold winter's night along with a cup of Earl Grey tea and off to the stage!
Again thanks,
Bob
