  • Rick - Thanks so much for this CBC series.  I passed the offerings on to my 16 year old who was very surprised that besides music (Is RAP really music?) he found that these mp3s really spoke to him.  He said they him 'into the sound' of it.

Again thanks for bridging the generation gap 'hear'.

The Elliot Graves Mysteries by David Ferber

    Synopsis

Elliot Graves’s life revolves around his room, school, Goth chick friend Sasha, hottie girlfriend Kim, and stoner buddy Alan. On the surface it’s a fairly typical, moderately alienated teenage world, except that Elliot seems to be a magnet for trouble. It seeks him out – whether it is car thieves, drug pushers, stalkers or nasty teachers – and Elliot is thrust into circumstances that grab him by the apathetic scruff of his neck and give him a good hard shake. He’s a highly moral chap (in a selfish kind of way) and when Elliot stumbles over trouble he feels compelled to set things right (in a confused sort of way). And he generally succeeds (in an amusing and inventive kind of way.)

Welcome to the mysterious life of Elliot Graves, the brainchild of 20 year-old Winnipeg writer, David Ferber. The series was produced in Toronto and Winnipeg by Tom Anniko and stars Jacob Tierney as Elliot.

It’s back to school for Elliot Graves and, alas, it’s also back to the same grade. Ignoring the mixed signals from his best friend Sasha, Elliot obsesses over Katie, the resident Grade 11 hottie. Last year Katie liked Elliot, but this year she barely notices him. Inevitably Elliot develops a severe case of wanting something he can’t have, because someone has alienated Katie’s affections and Elliot sets out to discover who. Sasha is initially upset, but when she discovers the identity of Katie’s secret lover, she too becomes part of Elliot’s plan to break up the relationship.

An undercurrent of violence is rippling through Elliot’s school. His best friend, the stoner Alan, is suddenly afraid to leave his house and Elliot – ever vigilant – sets out to discover why. His search leads to darkened parks and grow-houses in scary Winnipeg suburbs. The only plus to it all is that Elliot begins a romance with the rich and desirable Kim, who is very impressed with his reputation as a young man who can put evil to bed.

Elliot’s romance with the rich and beautiful Kim is progressing, much to Sasha’s annoyance. One morning, Elliot wakes up at Kim’s house to find his car stolen and insults spray-painted on the garage. Elliot manages to track down his car – it has been sold to a wrecker. Recovering his money leads to near tragic results and Elliot learns that there is a price to be paid for his moral crusading.

    Aired: February 2, 2004

Elliot’s Goth pal Sasha is receiving a series of increasingly disturbed messages in her locker. They all quote from Romeo and Juliet and are accompanied by small gifts. Sasha is initially flattered, until she receives a vial of blood. The messages all refer to Valentine’s Day, which is fast approaching, and Elliot and Sasha need to find the identity of the sender before then – because all signs indicate that Sasha’s stalker has evil on his mind. Their frantic search brings Elliot and Sasha closer together and Elliot – for the first time – begins to act out his feelings in a relatively open and honest way.

    s2e1 The Bad Lieutenant
    Aired: February 9, 2004

Elliot, his Goth-girlfriend Sasha and their stoner buddy Alan are camped out at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. It’s raining, Elliot has just been mugged and he’s also suspicious that their happy little threesome is also a triangle of a very different nature. But then he is diverted by an encounter with his old cop pal Chin, and Elliot suddenly realizes that some bigger things are going down amidst the rain-sodden folkies.

    s2e2 Father Knows Best
    Aired: February 16, 2004

Elliot has a job and employer he likes, but Liz’s business establishment may not last long. Someone is terrorizing the merchants of her district, driving down the real estate prices. And that’s not all that’s bothering our hero – Elliot’s old girlfriend Sasha’s old father has just returned from the blue – and he’s up to some nasty old tricks.

    s2e3 Justified Means
    Aired: February 23, 2004

Elliot’s brother Charlie is in huge financial trouble. His wife is pregnant and he’s about to lose his house to back taxes. When Charlie takes drastic (and illegal) measures to save his fledgling family, Elliot must embark on his own, highly risky version of a brotherly intervention.

s2e4 The Quick and the Dead
    Aired: March 1, 2004

Elliot is pulled in about a dozen directions - by his girlfriend Kim and his (other) girlfriend Sasha. The only place he finds peace of mind is behind the wheel of his hot little car, road racing. But then a street contest turns tragic and once again Elliot is forced to make some difficult moral choices.
