By Charlotte Hastings, adapted by Peggy Wells
The villagers of Denzil St. David near Norwich will not forget that night in February 1947. The unusually high tides were battering at the sea walls and the countryside was threatened with severe flooding. Many people were leaving their homes for the safety of the high ground where stood the Convent of Our Lady of Rheims ...
Among them are a pair of prison officers escorting a prisoner on her way to be hanged for murder in Norwich.
The prisoner, Sarat Carn, is an artist who has been convicted of poisoning her brother. Sarat is bewildered, tormented and aloof.
However, Sister Bonaventure is convinced Sarat is innocent and becomes determined to unravel the mystery, against the wishes of the stern Mother Superior.
