Part 1: The callow Allan Armadale unexpectedly inherits a substantial estate in Norfolk, bringing him to the attention of the beautiful and dangerous fortune-hunter Lydia Gwilt, who plans to seduce and marry him.

 

Part 2:  Lydia's plan to marry Allan and secure his fortune runs into difficulties. She finds her own passions, as well as those around her, are starting to interfere with her schemes, especially her increasing attraction to the heir's companion Midwinter - and he to her.

 

Part 3:  Lydia decides on a new and more violent way to secure Allan's fortune - by impersonating his widow. Her plans include murder, but her passion for Allan's companion Midwinter threatens to complicate matters.
