Dr. Wirtham's Comix & Stories (1976-1987)

WARNING

This comic is a typical 1970s-1980s Underground Comix.  The stories and illustrating are excellent Horror in this case, but in typical Underground fashion is mixed with over the top doses of drugs, free love and Nudity.  Those of you that cannot overlook the obvious to get to the well written and illustrated Horror stories would best refrain from downloading of this title.  -------------------  R

The first issue of Dr. Wirtham's Comix & Stories was written and illustrated entirely by publisher Clifford Neal, who adopted the pseudonym Oisif Egaux throughout this book (and for most of his other comic book appearances). Much of Neal's art, particularly in this comic, has a distinctive, heavy cross-hatch style. Perhaps this style is derived from Neal's fascination with binary systems analysis (essentially, computer programming, but Neal's interpretation appears to apply to art and human perception). His text article "Decoding The Codex" may help explain his fascination, but I find it essentially incomprehensible. In any case, the artwork is oddly striking and dynamic.

In this book, Neal also makes his pitch for contributions from the reading public. Over the course of the next several months, he must have received quite a response, as his subsequent issues present an ever-growing cast of cartoonists and stories.

In the second issue, publisher Clifford Neal is joined by a variety of contributors, such as Will A. Meugniot, Mike Roberts, Rick Veitch and Bill Black. As Clifford predicted, his co-contributors' work outshines his own. Love the opening story by Meugniot, "Hot Dog!"

The third issue of Dr. Wirtham's adds a full-color cover, clearly a step up for Clifford Neal's comic magazine. The comic features several stories about death, including a fine contribution by Mike Roberts, "Heavenly Bodies." I still marvel at the fact that Clifford Neal managed to produce this series from way out in Mystic, Connecticut.

The "Art History" issue is when the series really begins to enter its prime, as it expands to 60 pages and incorporates a "Letters" page. Good stories and some terrific art throughout, including the truly stinky Poe tribute, "The Tell-Tale Fart."

The fifth issue of Dr. Wirtham's Comix & Stories was also the sixth issue, as Clifford Neal expanded the size of the comic once again, this time to 68 pages and turning it into a "flip book" with two front covers. The list of contributors also continued to grow, with excellent work from Jay Kinney ("Black Cat City"), Eric Vincent ("A Portrait of the Arteest"), Greg Budgett and Gary Dumm, and Rick Veitch, along with many others.

It took three years to compile the second double issue in the Dr. Wirtham's Comix & Stories series, but it turned out to be a massive one. The book is 100 pages thick and features over 20 artists and writers, including Jay Kinney, Mike Matthews, Greg Irons, Robert Williams and Peter Bagge, who contribute a diverse variety of stories and artwork.

Dr. Wirtham's #9 is also a double-sided comic book, but this time it is only considered one issue instead of two. The book contains 60 pages of solid contributions from the likes of Mike Roberts, Jay Kinney and Ed Watson. Highlights include Gary Dumm and Greg Budgett's delightful "The Complete Videots," Joe Zabel's ephemeral tale about two sisters, "A Vacant Lot," and Watson's morbidly perverse "Illustrated Detective Stories." There is also a nice sampling of one-page erotic pin-up art that ranges from the sublime to the bizarre.

REVIEW SCORE 9
Dr. Wirtham's #10 contains 60 pages of solid contributions from the likes of Mike Matthews, Gary Dumm, Greg Budgett, and Ed Watson. Highlights include Clifford Neal's "It's Sure Real Wasted," in which he relates the story of a real-life serial killer who preyed on teenage girls near his home town, "Creation and the Theory of Delayed Perception" by Mark Burbey and Bill Turner; a story about a young man recalling some of the less pleasant memories from his past, and Watson's goofy "Cock Eyed Capers," a farcical "call to arms" for hard-working penises everywhere. Like the last issue, there's a nice collection of one-page erotic pin-up art that ranges from the sublime to the bizarre.

This is the final issue of the series, which had a solid run and maintained high quality standards from the first issue to the last. I wish it had sold enough to keep in going through the comic-book boom in the early '90s, which would have given us eight or ten more issues of excellence.
