Publisher's Weekly
The author of original and literate suspense novels, Westlake excels also at creating mystery adventures in science-fiction settings. The selections in this volume, nine short stories and a book-length story, Anarchaos , originally appeared in SF magazines. Anarchy/chaos is the condition of society on the planet where Rolf Malone arrives from Earth after serving time for murder. While he lacks most human emotions, Rolf does love his brother Gar who was killed on Anarchaos, and he is bent on vengeance. Westlake conveys unbridled horror as the lone Earthling, though cunning and violent, is outnumbered by creatures of Hell, the city where events reach a climax. Both the novella and a much shorter cautionary tale, ''Hydra,'' carry an implied warning about future life in a polluted world. Other entries relieve the grimness, displaying the author's sense of humor, particularly in a send up of Hammett's fat man seeking the fabled bird and Poe's detective spotting the missing paper, ''The Ultimate Caper: The Purloined Letter.''

  • Westlake can be exceeduingly grim at times, but he writes well. Thanks.

    One question:

Looking through the uploads, i don't see this:

Other entries relieve the grimness, displaying the author's sense
of humor, particularly in a send up of Hammett's fat man seeking the
fabled bird and Poe's detective spotting the missing paper, ''The
    Ultimate Caper: The Purloined Letter.''

Is it buried in one of the chapters posted?
    • I wondered the same thing.
    • Ahh..apparently this audio book is an abridged version from the original book..
My bad to list the wrong review.
    • ARRRRGGGHHHHH

I _HATE_ abridged books, from Reader's Digest onward.

I've read "Anarchaos." It's a dark, almost bleak story but well-written, evoking exactly the atmosphere that Westlake intended.

I do NOT want to read (or hear) someone's "impression of what he meant in shorter form."

      Here's the Bible, abridged:
God created the earth. Lots of people fought over who should be in charge of it. There's a bunch of poetry and other material that doesn't advance the story, so we'll drop that. Some prophets predicted that a guy would appear who would be the new boss. At the end of the book, they're still waiting."
(Editor's note - a sequel, called "The New Testament," will be abridged separately. Further volumes by smaller groups, also appear from time to time.)
      THE END

      Somehow, it's different. :>P
    • As far as I know..this is complete. I think that may be only a reference to a story by Publisher's Weekly rather than the name of the actual story.
It should and does have 9 short stories ..along with the novella Anarchaos..
