Congo by Michael Crichton

The story centers on members of a diamond company that investigates the mysterious deaths of the previous prospecting expedition deep in the Congo rainforest. Crichton set Congo in the tradition of Conan Doyle's Lost World and Haggard's King Solomon's Mines (even featuring the mines of that work's title) but set the story in the modern age.  These adventurers have heliocopters, satellite phones and lasers.
