Our Friend In The Corner - BBC Radio - early 90s

Does anyone have the (if memory serves) 4 part BBC Radio 4 series "Our Friend In The Corner". It was basically a program about BBC Radio and the sort of things that you might find there. It goes back to the birth of the BBC and ended up in the sixties.

I've looked for it here but (somewhat surprisingly - given the depth of available radio programmes) I can't find it.

I remember I found it a bit dull at the time - but I'd really like to try it again. I've been meaning to ask about this for a while.

Thanks, David.

  • Hi David

I am very new to this group, so please excuse my ignorance if I misunderstand procedures. I have copies of this interesting programme, which I have recorded as 'The Friend in the Corner': 1936, 1943, 1947, 1956, 1962, 1967.

Happy to upload and will do so shortly if you still need it.  Another sort of similar programme, which I recorded, was 'When Housewives had the Choice'. An affectionate look back at the long lasting 'Houswives Choice' which couples music with contemnporary news and events.

  • Wayne - that is exactly the program I was talking about!

I'd actually found out it was already re-running before I'd read your answer - I got in bed last night and went to Iplayer on my phone to see what I was going to listen to before going to sleep - and there it was, bold as brass. I suppose if I'd just googled it before asking everyone to scratch around in the bottom of their library I'd have found it!

Its not exactly titled as I remember - it's just "the" as opposed to "our", and it's got 6 episodes - but that's the one. I remember having what I believed to be the whole thing on a 12O cassette. I obviously didn't because 6 x approx 25 minutes per episode wouldn't fit on one tape.

So for the first time in about 20 years I listened to it last night. It's a good program. I'll be interested to hear the changes in tone as it moves on through the years (but I bet even by the 60s, said tone is still very similar).

    • If anyone would like to skip ahead and listen to the whole 6 part series I have uploaded the series here - https://www.mediafire.com/?fg04ofkd2h70q3d . I will warn you it's encoded at 320kbps. I received it that way from a distro, and I don't believe in down sampling to save space. The download comes in at just a smidge over 400MB. I hope this won't put you off downloading.

      All the best

      Paul

    • Thanks Paul.

    • Many thanks Paul - I'll download when I'm home tonight!

    • It's a pleasure David.

    • Many thanks for this, Paul.

    • My pleasure Steve.

  • Do you mean the program currently running on BBC 4? Info here -

  • This is exactly the type of program that would have been shared on the late, lamented radioarchive ...

    Sorry, not in my library
