Applegate agrees to give Joe until the day before the season ends, September 24th at 9:00 PM, to get out of the deal at any time. Should Joe decide to play in the final game on the 25th, he will belong to Applegate. Joe says his final farewells to Meg while she is sleeping (Goodbye, Old Girl) and is magically transformed into 22-year-old Joe Hardy, the greatest ballplayer in history.
