Behind The Smile - The Real Life Of Bob Marley
BBC Radio Music Documentary
128K

Musician and BBC 6 Music presenter Brinsley Forde peels back the layers of myth, spin and downright lies to look at the man who became one of the most recognised and celebrated musicians of all time.

In part one, we talk to fellow Wailer Bunny Livingston; a sparring partner at a trenchtown gym; his next door neighbour at Studio One; musicians Derrick Harriot and Prince Jazzbo, broadcaster Neville Willoughby, DJ Big Youth, record producer and former Prime Minister Edward Seaga and Island Boss Chris Blackwell.

We also hear from Chris Marley, a descendant of Bob's white English father Norval, who has a new perspective on Bob's dad.

In addition, the documentary includes some unreleased Wailer material and some early archive interviews not heard before on UK radio.

Brinsley Forde has been at the centre of the international reggae scene for more than 30 years having been the front-man of top British reggae band Aswad. Brinsley presents Lively Up Yourself on BBC 6 Music, Saturday night into Sunday (0000-0100,) providing an opportunity to appreciate the wealth of songs and styles that reggae has generated over the years and also to enjoy the latest releases in what remains a unique, vibrant and evolving genre.

Four episodes of approximately 30 minutes each (originally broadcast as two episodes of 1 hour each)

First broadcast in 2005 on BBC Radio 2.
