"Cloning isn't ego gone berserk. On the contrary, cloning is the end of
the ego. For the first time, the spirit of man will be able to separate
itself from the human machine, to see it and use it as a machine. He is
no longer identified with one special Me machine. The human organism has
become an artifact he can use like a plane, a boat, or a space capsule."
- William S. Burroughs, IMMORTALITY

That is what this revolution is about. End of game. New games?

There are no new games from here to eternity.

END OF THE WAR GAME.

  • Brilliant Rick!

    • Theron, there is another Burroughs posted in Headphones for you.  --------------------------  R

  • Rick, this is an utterly brilliant compilation. I am an avid fan and reader of William S. Burroughs, have a lot of his readings and spoken word performances myself, and some of this is so rare and in many cases very difficult to find. Thanks so much. Is Radio Ether a series of radio programs? I thought there might be other programs featuring other writers and artists as well. Part of the reason I'm wondering: the four discs are so thoughtfully put together (with sections presented as Burroughsiam "Cut Ups" -- I thought there might be other Radio Ethers showcasing other cutting edge authors and performers. Just wanted to be sure I thanked you -- its a fascinating meditation on Burroughs' writing and his world.

    • Yes it is.  If you Google it you may find a list of showtimes and if they have any downloads.I will look, I am not sure whether I hav e any others or if they are any good.   ----------------------------------------------------  R

    • I did post another Burroughs  beside that one.  In the upper right hand corner of the Times past screen is a search box.  Put in Burroughs name and the other post or 2 should pop up.   ------------------  R

    • Yes, I downloaded that one also. Also great. Also some fairly rare recordings of "The Western Lands", another text that isn't heard as often as "Naked Lunch" or "Junky." Thanks again for that also. I have audiobooks (not read by Burroughs, but wonderful narrations) of "Naked Lunch", "Junky" and a number of other Burroughs pieces, and other "beat" literature. I'll double check how to post audiobooks and do that over the next few days. But this is all great stuff. Thanks.

    • I downloaded a lot of Burroughs from Usenet some time ago and it is sitting on a hard drive waiting for me to have time to go through it.  I like Burroughs himself but due to an nerve injury, excruciating pain and the amount of medication I have to take to keep it all at a dull roar, I have found very few Audiobooks that I can listen to without falling asleep with the drone of one voice so I seldom try.  In audio I am a lover of Dramatisations and poetry.  I will look over what i downloaded and get it in order and will send you a list to see if there is anything you want.  Now all I have to do is find the time.  Besides being disabled myself I take care of my wife who is bed or wheelchair bound due to an inoperable benign brain tumor.  i also have many doctor's appointments myself both for my nerve damage in my leg and a heart problem with A-Fib lately and complications due to my CHF being accelerated by the A-Fib.  I was cardioverted last week and it worked but who knows for how long.  My legs became so edematous that they cracked open and a now have a weekly appt with the wound clinic for full lower leg dressings and debridement.  Inbetween all this i try to do what I love and that is to listen watch and post for others to enjoy.  We have quite a few disabled who are members and posting is my way of doing good, since I cannot work anymore.  I was a Registered Nurse and flitted back and forth over a 30 year period between 2 specialties Psychiatry and the Operating Room.  My last job beforeI was injured in each was Psychiatric Crisis for 5 years after I burned out working for 10 years in Night Trauma in a major New your Trauma center's Operating Room.  I was depressed after the injury because i actually missed helping others.  Then I found Times Past and have turned a self centered hobby into that which I can actually help others including many disabled like myself to have the enjoyment of the spoken and visual arts that they could not possibly afford or if they could afford, to get out to get them. --------------------------------  R

    • Well, Rick … these programs mean a lot. I also am fully disabled (ruined leg and ankle, complex regional pain syndrome -- what they call a bad surgical result) so I can relate to much of what you say. I spend  a lot of time in doctors' offices and probably am about to go through another round of surgeries, so it's great to become immersed in some of these great dramatizations and it helps the pain and boredom immensely, though it sounds like you've had some major challenges yourself. I started out with some of the great CBC shows like Nightfall and Vanishing Point (my pain is much worse at night and it helps me make it through) and then started enjoying all the other great offerings on the site. I used to be a night owl for other reasons, now I have trouble sleeping … so latte night fare like Art Bell (long before Art I loved Jean Shepherd and Long John Nebel), and my early literary heroes included Burroughs and the Beats, Charles Bukowski, all those hard living, midnight singing nightingales of the soul. As I find interesting shows (Welcome to Nightvale seems an interesting podcast) I will try to post them also. Best - Theron

    • Theron, my RSD is the old term for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, so you know exactly what I am talking about because we have the exact same thing.  Well it appears that we have 2 peas in a pod here.  Reading your note it was like reading about me only difference is that mine is in my hip, thigh and upper leg.  I had what they call a rebound injury.  I was an RN and after my heart surgery with complications like a hospital acquired (nosocomial) infection in my chest and on almost a years worth of IVs every day with the most caustic IV antibiotics there are that burned all the way up my arm until they were done.  They ripped up my veins so bad they had to put in a central line to finish the "treatment".  Finally when that was done i went back to work in a Nursing home because either of my specialties would end up in possible disaster, OR, can't run anymore and Psychiatry I didn't want to get hit in the chest that was weakened with the massive infection.  To make a long story short through the negligence of others I took out all the cartilage in my left hip in one motion and on the rebound I damaged a nerve that cannot be fixed, hence the RSD or CRPS, both terminologies are in use in different places.   My neurologist explained it to me that I inured the nerve in my abdomen and the nerve goes down the internal aspec of the groin and leg.  It ends just above the knee.  The injury causes it to fire continually  causing extreme pain.  I asked them to amputate it and was told no because of the type of injury the phantom pain would be worse than what i have now and i wouldn't have a leg to stand on.  LOL  Isn't life grand.  Oh well at least I am alive.  Now I am taking care of my wife when I should be doing nothing to aggravate it.  I don't do anything strenuous, it is just the increased hobbling around on the cane that aggravates it more and for all I know it could be just as bad if i stayed in bed.

I am also a night owl and so is my wife.  me 30 years on the night shift and her the same time frame but on the evening shift.  That is probably good in my case because my pain also increases exponentially at night.  Interesting, this is the first time I ever met anyone with the same diagnosis.  Glad to meet you, not glad that you have it too. I looked over about half of those files I downloaded  and the bulk of them are out and out viruses and most of the rest are rar-in-rar passworded crap that send you to an attack site to get the password and while you are there they steal your info.  My newsleecher program for Usenet ferrets these out stops the download and warns you.  The viruses are interesting in that the are listed as a program or set that has tob at least a gig in size and the size listed os 50 Kb.  Some people wonder how they get viruses.  They don't read they just click.  It's the same thing with adware and the like.  People don't read they just click and then wonder why their machine is messed up..

Enough of the whining.  I will get off my soapbox and wish you a good night and I am really sorry that you have this too.  I will talk tomorrow more.  ----------------  R
