Here's a nice half-hour programme that BBC Radio 4 broadcast on Christmas Day in 1983. the actress Kathy Staff visits two of the villages on the outskirts of Sheffield where a unique and rather wonderful tradition of carol-singing thrives in the public houses. You can read more about the "Sheffield carols" here: http://www.villagecarols.org.uk/working.htm.
The late Kathy Staff will be best known as the oddly likable termagant Norah Batty in the BBC TV sitcom "Last of the Summer Wine".

And a 12-minute extract from "Music Matters", broadcast by BBC Radio 3 in December 1994, shortly after the first biennial Festival of Village Carols at Grenoside.
