Vincent Price and the Horror of the English Blood Beast

Vincent Price and the Horror of the English Blood Beast

By Matthew Broughton.

In 1967, Vincent Price came to the UK to make the horror movie
Witchfinder General. It was the best performance of his career, and the
worst few months of his life. This play takes a light-hearted look
behind the scenes of the making of this classic British film.

Other parts played by Simon Ludders and Lynne Seymour

Produced and directed by Sam Hoyle.

  • Here's the RadioTimes review:

Think of movie star Vincent Price, and his eye-rolling performances in those stylish 1960s Edgar Allan Poe adaptations will probably spring to mind. However, the film that's arguably his finest in the horror genre is the 1968 classic, Witchfinder General. With an authenticity and brutality rare in British horror pictures at the time, the film challenged the cosy output of Hammer studios by representing 17th-century England in the grip of civil war and a terrifying mania encouraged by zealous (and real-life historical) witch persecutor Matthew Hopkins (Price). This entertaining play by Matthew Broughton goes behind the scenes and reveals the antipathy between the avuncular Price and wunderkind director Michael Reeves (who actually wanted Donald Pleasence for the role and not a star renowned for his campness). The result of their love-hate relationship was Price's most chilling portrayal.Jeremy Aspinall (Radio Times)
