The Color Purple by Alice Walker dramatised by Pat Cumper Directed by Pauline Harris. Monday 6 to Friday 17 October 2008 (Women's Hour Drama) This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is a touching and compelling story set in the harsh segregated world of the Deep South between the wars that tells the story of one young black woman's struggle against adversity. The book is made up entirely of letters, and this evocative serial is a fusion of original letters and dramatised scenes. Celie is a young black girl born into poverty and segregation. Raped by the man she calls her father, she has two children taken away from her, is separated from her beloved sister, Nettie, and is trapped in an ugly marriage to a man she calls Mister. But then she meets the glamorous singer Shug Avery, a woman who has taken charge of her own destiny. With Shug's help, Celie begins to forge her own identity.
