The Bob Hope Trail - 2008 BBC2
192/44
Michael Freedland's series tracking the lives of big stars through ordinary people who met them turns its attention to 'the fastest gagman in the business', Bob Hope
Thoughts on "The Bob Hope Trail" after four episodes. It's pretty great. As usual, Freedland talks to the behind the scenes people who knew and worked with Hope (including Rhonda Fleming) rather than latter-day historians. He doesn't minimize Hope's legendary philandering, or his occasional thoughtless cruelty to his writers, but the portrait that emerges is an outsized personality who has show biz in his very DNA. Makes me want to go back and look at some of his great 40s and early 50s films where he couldn't miss.
